A Dengue epidemic has broken out in Côte d'Ivoire, causing 12 cases and 1 death, the National Security Council, chaired by Head of State Alassane Ouattara, announced in a statement on Thursday.
"The Minister in charge of Health informed the National Security Council of the identification, by the health services, of twelve (12) cases of Dengue in the Health District of Cocody-Bingerville, with one (01) case of death notified”, indicated the text, transmitted to the press.
The Minister in charge of Health has also indicated to the National Security Council the development of a multi-sector response plan, which is currently being implemented.
"This plan aims, among other things, to raise public awareness of good hygiene and sanitation practices, in particular the elimination of breeding grounds in used tires. It also consists of carrying out systematic screening of patients for any fever not malaria," the statement said.
The Council also specifies that President Alassane Ouattara has instructed the Minister in charge of Health and his collaborators to take all necessary measures to eradicate this epidemic in Côte d'Ivoire.
The WHO estimates the number of cases per year at 50 million, including 500,000 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever, which are fatal in 2.5% of cases.
In Côte d'Ivoire, an epidemic that occurred in 2019 had already caused the death of two people, and left 130 infected.
