HCMC sets off alarm sound for dengue outbreak
    SGGPFriday, April 22, 2022 21:28

HCMC and Southern localities have seen a rise in dengue cases over the past weeks, including severe cases and fatalities. The health sector issued a warning about the complex situation of this year’s dengue fever.

HCMC reported nearly 4,500 dengue cases, including 109 severe patients who are being treated in hospitals and two deaths by mid-April this year. It rings an alarm bell as the number of severe cases was only 38 out of the total number of 20,000 dengue patients in 2019. The number of dengue cases in this year is higher than the figure of the same period in 2020 and 2021.

According to Associate professor PhD Nguyen Vu Trung, Director of the Pasteur Institute in HCMC, this year’s dengue fever would be complicated due to climate change and an increase in the number of cases at the beginning of the epidemic season. The health sector needs to act urgently to reduce the number of severe cases and deaths and prevent large-scale outbreaks of infectious diseases...

Dengue fever becomes big concern in southern Vietnam
          Xinhua, June 3, 2022

HO CHI MINH CITY, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Dengue fever is a big concern in Ho Chi Minh City as the number of severe cases in January-May has been seven times as high as the same period last year, Vietnam News Agency cited local health authorities as saying on Thursday.

Major dengue fever outbreaks are likely to occur, according to Ho Chi Minh City's Department of Health.

Littering at schools may encourage the spread of the disease, as plastic trash can be a place where water could stagnate, vice chairman of the city People's Committee Duong Anh Duc said, urging schools to enhance hygiene measures on campus.

The southern city has recorded more than 10,000 dengue fever infections this year, surging 46.4 percent year on year, said a recent report by local newspaper Tuoi Tre.

Seven people have died from the disease in the five-month period in the southern business hub, while the number of infections has been increasing in 20 of the 22 districts of the city...

Dengue fever kills 41 in first half

The Heath Ministry said 41 people died of dengue fever in January-June, up 31 cases compared to the same period last year.

In the first six months this year, Vietnam recorded 136,075 dengue fever cases, up three times from the same period last year.

Of them, 41 patients had died, an increase of 31 deaths, Nguyen Trong Khoa, deputy head of the Administration of Medical Examination and Treatment under the Ministry of Health, said at a meeting Tuesday.

Most dengue fever cases and fatalities were recorded in the south, which has experienced the rainy season since late April. The season is normally the peak of dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral disease, since there is lot of stagnant water in which mosquito larvae breed.

"Among the dead, 18 were children. Of those, 72 percent were obese," said Khoa...
