Peru declares epidemiological alert for dengue outbreak with 8 deaths
    16. February 2022 - 19:32
    (AFP)

Peru, the country with the highest death rate in the world from Covid-19, declared an epidemiological alert in the face of a new outbreak of dengue, which has caused eight deaths and more than 5,000 cases this year, the Ministry of Health.

The outbreak takes place in almost half of the country and in Lima, where authorities have started to smoke in several areas to avoid the presence of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue, zika and chikungunya.

"5,218 cases of dengue were reported [...], including eight deaths," the Ministry of Health's National Epidemiology Center said in a statement, citing data relating to the end of the first week of February.

Compared to the same period last year, there is an increase in deaths (+1), despite infections having fallen by more than 50%.

The alert consists of a call to health services "to strengthen the epidemiological surveillance system" and population control and also to carry out information and educational campaigns.

Dengue is an endemic disease of tropical areas that causes high fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain and, in the most severe cases, hemorrhage that can lead to death.

During the year 2021, Peru recorded 39 deaths and 49,274 cases of dengue. In 2020, there were 86 deaths and 46,749 cases of the disease, according to the Ministry of Health.

The two years of the covid-19 pandemic - 2020 and 2021 - reflect an increase in dengue compared to the last pre-pandemic year: in 2019 there were 37 deaths and 15,287 cases.

The pandemic caused interruptions in the care of tropical diseases - such as dengue -, which can interfere with the control and elimination of these diseases, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) warned in January.

Dengue was first detected in Peru in 1984 and has become an endemic disease.

Peru is the country with the highest mortality rate from covid-19 in the world, with 6,300.4 deaths per million inhabitants, according to the balance made by AFP based on official figures.

About 10% of Peru's 33 million people have contracted the virus, according to health authorities, and 207,000 have died.

Specifically, the majority of dengue cases (more than 85%) are concentrated in the departments of Piura, Ucayali, Loreto, San Martín, Cajamarca, Cusco, Madre de Dios, Huánuco, Ancash and Junín.

The Minsa stressed that the persistence of dengue transmission in the country is due to "environmental, geographic, social determinants, high migration of the population, to and from endemic sites, shortage of drinking water and inadequate water storage."

In addition, the disease has presented a seasonal behavior that coincides with the rainy season in the Amazon regions and with the summer season on the coast of the country.
