Deaths from diseases transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito rose by 300% and 8,000% in the same period

Dengue and chikungunya cases broke a record in the state of Goiás in 2022. The numbers are the highest since records of diseases from the Aedes aegypti mosquito began to be made, in 1994. During the course of the year, Goiás recorded 21 dengue cases per hour, 515 per day and 15,475 per month.

In all, the State Department of Health (SES) accounted for 187,774 confirmed cases. The number is 247.4% higher than that recorded in 2021 (54,049 cases). In addition, the records of notified cases also increased by 279.6%, after going from 82,889 notifications in 2021 to 270,658 in 2022.

The number of deaths is also surprising due to the expressive increase of 300%. Just last year, 156 people died from complications from the disease, while in 2021 the number reached 39.

For the Superintendent of Health Surveillance at SES, Flúvia Amorim, the increase may be related to the unusual amount of rain that fell on the state. She also claims that the state is heading towards an increase in the number of infections by the disease, which lives a peak during the months of January and February.

“There are multiple factors, but the suspension of visits due to the pandemic and the population that forgot that dengue fever existed contributed to this situation. About 90% of breeding sites are in homes, there are studies that prove this ”, he explained.
    Chikungunya and Zika

Confirmed cases related to chikungunya, on the other hand, saw an even greater increase of 3,517%. That's because disease records jumped from 109 in 2021 to 3,943 last year. Lethality, however, is lower than that of dengue, but also followed an upward trend, going from one death (in 2021) to eight (in 2022). That is, an increase of 8,000%.

Zika, on the other hand, recorded a 100% increase in the number of confirmed cases. There were 30 cases last year and 15 in 2021. The disease was responsible for one death, the first death in four years. The first is the last death from the disease since 2015, it was recorded in 2018 by the SES...
