Rio Grande do Sul goes on high alert against dengue
          April 23, 2022

In Bento, 79 foci of Aedes aegypti have already been found. The number exceeds the entire year of 2021, which reinforces the importance of

Dengue records increased by 95.2% this year across the country, compared to the same period in 2021. According to an epidemiological bulletin released by the Ministry of Health on April 18, 400,000 probable cases of the disease were reported, which represents an incidence of 184 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants.

Until the date of the survey, 112 deaths from dengue were confirmed in Brazil. According to the Federal Council of Medicine, two factors can explain this considerable growth. The first is that dengue is a seasonal disease, with a higher incidence in periods of rain and heat. And, as this year many regions had rains above expectations, it favored the accumulation of water, a favorable situation for the emergence of outbreaks of the transmitting mosquito.

Another reason is that the fear of covid-19 made many people seek medical attention, increasing the official records of dengue cases, since, at first, the two diseases have similar symptoms.

Behind the Midwest region, the South Region is in second place in the disease incidence rate, with 272.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

State goes on high alert against dengue

The State Department of Health (SES) announced on Wednesday, April 20, that Rio Grande do Sul is on high alert against dengue. There are already more than 9,000 confirmed cases this year that occurred within the state, called autochthonous. Among these, five deaths from the disease have already been confirmed....

Dengue grows more than 150% with poverty and lack of actions

Dengue cases in Brazil grew by 151.4% during the first four months of 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year, and already exceed the total number of diagnoses in 2021. For experts, the current scenario raises the alarm for the need of public policies aimed at controlling the disease.

Data from the latest epidemiological bulletin from the Ministry of Health show that, until April, 757,068 probable cases of dengue were registered in the country, while in the 12 months of 2021 together, only 534,743 were identified. In 2020, that volume was 979,764, a total that should also be exceeded this year if cases continue at the current pace.

Analysts heard by GLOBO explain that the lack of measures to combat the transmitting mosquito, the impoverishment of the population and the fact that the disease is cyclical — it usually causes large waves every three years — are factors behind the increase. They reinforce that measures, both public and individual, need to be taken so that the numbers return to lower levels.

                case map

The region with the highest incidence of cases is the Midwest, with a rate of 1,171 diagnoses per 100,000 inhabitants. Next are the South (635.6); the Southeast (277.7), the North (176.1), and the Northeast (149.1). Overall, the incidence in the country is 354.9 cases per 100,000 people.

The federative units most affected are Goiás, Distrito Federal, Tocantins, Paraná and Santa Catarina. However, the state that reported the most increase in relation to 2021 was Rio Grande do Norte, with a number of cases 1,086.2% higher. On the other hand, Roraima, Amazonas and Acre were the only places where there was a reduction in cases...

Brazil: Over 1.3 million dengue cases and 834 deaths
                    Report from: 07.09.2022
Dengue cases and deaths in Brazil in 2022

The country has already registered 1.3 million cases of dengue this year. This leads to an incidence of 623.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

At least 1,279 cases of severe dengue fever (GD), which may include heart, lung, kidney, liver and central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction, have been observed - and 15,931 cases with warning signs (DSA). In the DSA cases, the symptoms can develop into, for example, abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, dehydration, severe dizziness and mucosal bleeding.

Two regions have an above-average incidence:

The Midwest continues to be hardest-hit, with 1,851.4 cases per 100,000 people — three times the state average.
The South has an incidence of 1,022 cases per 100,000 people.

The Ministry of Health reports the death of 831 people from dengue fever in Brazil in 2022. This is 3.3 times more victims than in 2021.

With the sharp rise in deaths, as early as September this is the third worst year in the country in the last decade, behind 2015 and 2019.

São Paulo reports three out of ten dengue deaths: A total of 253 people died there from dengue. The Goiás region reports 106 victims and Paraná 95 deaths. Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul record 88 and 66 deaths, respectively.

Infectologist explains increase in dengue cases in Brazil and how to prevent it

Dengue cases are on the rise again in Brazil. According to the epidemiological bulletin released by the Ministry of Health, until the last week of November, the country had registered around 1.3 million probable cases of dengue (incidence rate of 651.9 cases per 100,000 inhab.). When compared to 2021, there was an increase of 175.1% in the same period.

Until November, the country registered 951 deaths confirmed by the disease and another 114 under investigation, according to the Ministry. In addition to the number of cases, Brazil is currently experiencing the annual period of dengue fever, which, according to the Ministry of Health, occurs in the rainiest months of each region, usually from November to May.

In conversation with the TV Cultura website, Dr. Sandra Gomes de Barros, infectologist and professor of medicine at the Santo Amaro University, explains this increase. First of all, she stressed that it was possible to carry out a greater notification of cases in 2022 due to Covid-19, the focus of health in the last two years.

“In addition, we are in a period of more intense rainfall, it rains every day, with high temperatures. These climatic variations are very favorable for the proliferation of the aedes mosquito”, explains Sandra.

The infectologist also does not rule out the precariousness of basic sanitation in cities as a factor contributing to the increase in cases: “We have sociocultural and economic conditions of our population that also favor infectious diseases that are endemic, but also seasonal, which depend on certain periods. like dengue.”

She also classifies as worrying that we are going through the annual period of the rise of dengue at this time, precisely because of the severity that the infection can reach.

“Dengue, despite being a benign disease, can have an unfavorable course. It can evolve with hemorrhages, with complications with dysfunction of multiple organs, and it can lead the patient to death. It will depend on who this patient is going to acquire dengue, sometimes we are talking about a chronic kidney patient, a transplanted patient, the oncological patient who already has his defenses compromised, anyway. So a viral disease with it is enough for the development of a more serious condition”, exemplifies the health professional...

Brazil experiences explosion of dengue cases in 2022; year may end with record deaths from the disease
Total deaths from dengue in 2022 is already greater than that recorded in the last six years. Until the first week of December, 978 deaths were confirmed and more than 1.4 million cases were registered.

Brazil recorded 978 deaths from dengue in 2022. The accumulated total this year until December 5 already exceeds that seen in each of the last six years. The number is an alert for a new epidemic of the disease, which has been reaching all regions and should continue in the first months of 2023.

In addition to the 978 confirmed dengue deaths, another 98 are under investigation, according to the most recent epidemiological bulletin from the Ministry of Health.
Such a high number was only recorded in 2015, when 986 people died of dengue in Brazil.
                            To date, the number of deaths has increased by 400% in 2022 from the 2021 total;
Dengue cases jumped 172.4% in the comparison between the same period of 2021 and 2022.

If projections are confirmed, 2022 could end up as the deadliest year for dengue in Brazil: the number of deaths could exceed 1,000, something never seen since the 1980s, when the disease 'reemerged' in the country and began to be more frequent, with cycles of greater and lesser intensity.

According to the doctor, in recent years, the biggest dengue epidemics in Brazil took place in 2015, 2016 and 2019, in addition to 2022, which already secured its place on this list before it even ended.

Previously seen more strongly in hot and humid regions, this time dengue decided to also concentrate in areas that previously registered little or no incidence of infections by the virus, which is transmitted by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

"In Santa Catarina, for example. Joinville and Blumenau, which never had dengue, this year they are having a major epidemic since the first half", says the infectologist.

Joinville, located in the north of Santa Catarina, is the fourth city in Brazil with the highest number of dengue cases this year. Check the list of the 10 municipalities with the most probable cases of dengue (until December 5):

                            Brasília (DF): 67,274 cases;
