Data from the Ministry of Health updated today indicate that since January 1 there have been 18 deaths due to dengue fever across the country, with a total of 1,035 cases, while last year there were 11 deaths and 901 cases.
In 2020, there were 1,451 cases with 10 deaths, and the mortality rate, which measures the percentage of deaths from disease cases, is 1.7, compared to 1.2 in 2021 and 0.7 in 2020.
The largest share of cases, almost 700, are registered in Dili with about half of these in the Dom Aleixo area.
The data show that children under 14 continue to be the most affected, with 316 cases among children aged 5 to 14, 284 among children aged 1 to 4 years and 50 among children under one year.
The outbreak, which authorities admit could continue for the next few months, is putting pressure on health resources, especially in Dili, with hundreds of patients in various locations, including spaces used in the past to respond to Covid-19.
Most cases in Dili (576) are dengue fever, with 58 cases of hemorrhagic fever and 64 of "dengue shock syndrome", these two being the most serious cases.
