    27 august 2020

    Autochthonous case of dengue

The Padua Microbiology Laboratory reported a case of dengue in a 54-year-old patient residing in the Municipality of Montecchio Maggiore (VI). Following microbiological investigations, it was defined that this is a native case of dengue fever , as the subject did not travel abroad recently, but the infection was transmitted by the tiger mosquito which stung a family member who returned to late July from Indonesia, which today was confirmed to be the index case. This was announced by the Prevention Department of the Veneto Region.
“The patient - the regional prevention experts report - manifested a flu-like symptomatology which began on August 16 and resolved on August 20. Other members of the family, who are currently in good health and have not been hospitalized, presented the same symptoms, which lasted a few days. The outbreak appears to be limited to a family level . All planned disinfestation interventions have been started ".
La Direzione prevenzione della Regione: "Ora stanno tutti bene dopo sintomi di tipo influenzale". Colpito un 54enne di Montecchio Maggiore.

First autochthonous dengue outbreak in Italy, August 2020

      Eurosurveillance Volume 25, Issue 36, 10/Sep/2020

In August 2020, during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, five locally acquired cases of dengue virus type 1 were detected in a family cluster in Vicenza Province, North-East Italy where Aedes albopictus mosquitoes are endemic.

The primary case was an importation from West Sumatra, Indonesia.

This is the first outbreak of autochthonous dengue reported in Italy.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, screening of febrile travelers from endemic countries is crucial in areas where competent vectors are present.
