    Diana Cabrera

Dengue-transmitting mosquito Aedes Aegypti, has caused this year in Colombia 58,000 219 cases of this disease, as confirmed by the surveillance system of the National Institute of health (INS).

It is worth mentioning that of the total number of cases, 27,675 (47.5%) were without warning signs, 29,922 (51.4%) with warning signs, and 622 (1.1%) were severe dengue.

The director in charge of Promotion and Prevention of the Ministry of Health, Claudia Cuellar, assured that although dengue is a disease that can affect anyone who is bitten by the mosquito, it has special vigilance in those under 15 years of age, as well as in adults over 65 years of age with high mortality.

"The symptoms generated by dengue are fever, pain behind the eyes, headache, muscle and joint pain. But there are some warning signs to which you have to pay close attention, such as if there is decay or if a child does not wake up easily, bleeding in the gums or purple in the legs. In that case you should call or go to the emergency units, "she said.

The official added that it is also important not to self-medicate and maintain adequate hydration.

"We have to keep the house clean, preferably disinfect the tanks and pools every eight days, to avoid laying the eggs of the dengue transmitting mosquito. Do not accumulate water in the vases, in bottles or on tires, in addition to trying to sleep with a canopy, apply the repellent and wear long-sleeved clothing especially in hot weather, "he stressed.

The expert said that it is important to keep the houses closed between 6 and 8 in the morning and between 4 and 6 in the afternoon, times when these types of mosquitoes circulate the most.

The epidemiological bulletin of the National Institute of Health (INS) revealed that this year 33 deaths from dengue fever have been confirmed in the country, while the study is being carried out on 43 other people who died with similar symptoms.

Deaths from this disease were confirmed in the Valle del Cauca department with 8 cases; Santander with 4 cases; Cali, Cesar, Huila and Tolima with 3 cases each; Atlantic with 2 cases; Cauca, Caldas, Cartagena, Cundinamarca, Magdalena, Meta and Norte de Santander, with 1 case each.

Meanwhile, the case studies are being carried out in Valle del Cauca and Cali with 7 cases each; C?rdoba with 4 cases; Huila, Caquet? and Santa Marta with 3 cases each; Cauca and Norte de Santander with 2 cases each and Antioquia, Atl?ntico, Buenaventura, Caldas, Casanare, Cesar, Choc?, Cundinamarca, Guain?a, Magdalena, Santander and Sucre, with 1 case each.

The greatest affectations for dengue occur in the departments of Valle del Cauca, Huila, Tolima, Santander, Cundinamarca, Meta, Cesar and Caquet?, where the authorities carry out a constant evaluation to prevent their symptoms from being confused with other diseases that are registered in national level such as COVID-19.

The official of the Ministry of Health took the opportunity to call on the doctors to take into account that dengue is a disease that remains in force in the country, so it is necessary that all tests be carried out to rule out new cases.

"For health professionals, a very special call is made to remember that we have this type of disease that, before any febrile syndrome, a differential diagnosis must be made to confirm the disease and give timely and adequate treatment", projection.

According to the National Institute of Health, 51.9% (30,218) of the cases correspond to men, while 15.9% (99) of severe dengue occurred in children under 5 years of age.

The increase in dengue cases in 10 municipalities in the Valley has health authorities on alert.

“It is an epidemic that has lasted since October 2019 and we are concerned that it will join a peak in October. There is a permanent report in the department and a significant number of deaths, many under the age of 8, ”said Valle Health Secretary, Mar?a Cristina Lesmes.

The municipalities of Cali, Candelaria, Cartago, El Cerrito, Florida, Ginebra, Guacar?, Jamund?, Palmira and Tulu? report a significant increase in severe dengue.

This year there have been 47 deaths in the Valley; El Dovio and Obando have 100 percent confirmed cases, while El ?guila and Ulloa are the most hospitalized. Lesmes hopes that with the opening of services, the institutions where Covid-19 patients are treated will be differentiated, so that people have more confidence to return to the provision of health services.

The official said that in the previous months we repeated to them that the places of greatest contagion were the hospitals and we are making a great effort to separate the entrances, so that you can resume your consultation and undo what we stopped doing in the first eight months of the year, outpatient surgeries, outpatient services and all diagnostic services including dentistry.

According to figures from the Valle Health Secretary, until week 34, 21,626 dengue cases were reported in the department, 47 deaths, Cali being the municipality with the highest number of cases, reaching 10,954.
