Big jump in dengue clusters over just two days
Dengue infections have been rising over the past two weeks, following five weeks of declining figures.

SINGAPORE - Twenty-two new dengue clusters have emerged over a period of two days, bringing the total number as at Wednesday (Jan 8) to 108.

This is a 25 per cent increase over the 86 clusters reported on Monday.

Dengue infections have been rising over the past two weeks, following five weeks of declining figures.

There were 313 reported dengue infections last week. Between Sunday and 3pm on Wednesday, another 189 people were diagnosed with the viral disease.

The current outbreak appears to be quite severe, with 20 people dying of it last year.

Eighty-eight people had the more severe dengue haemorrhagic fever last year; this is more than quadruple the previous five-year median of 20 such cases a year.

Generally, one in five people diagnosed by a doctor to have dengue is seriously ill enough to require hospital care.

The infections appear to be spread islandwide, although there is a slightly higher concentration in the north and the east.

The biggest cluster is in Pasir Ris, with 153 cases. Of these, almost a third are in the parallel roads of Riverina View and Riverina Crescent.

Other big clusters include two in the Yio Chu Kang area, one with 134 people infected and the other with 129 cases...

Singapore may be headed for big dengue outbreak with emergence of little-seen virus strain

SINGAPORE - Singapore may be heading for a big dengue outbreak this year (2020), with the recent rise in infections stemming from a strain of the virus that has not been seen much for years.

The National Environment Agency said on Wednesday (Jan 15) there has not been an outbreak of DENV-3 virus here in the past three decades. This means that there is low immunity in the population to this serotype.

There are four dengue serotypes, with the outbreaks here caused byDENV-1 and DENV-2. DENV-2 has been the dominant strain since 2016.

A change in the dominant strain usually presages a major outbreak.

The NEA said in a release: "We have seen an increase in Dengue virus serotype 3 cases and clusters over the past month.

"As Singapore has not seen a DENV-3 outbreak in the last three decades, the population immunity for DENV-3 is low and therefore more susceptible to transmission of the virus...

Dengue fever in Singapore: Symptoms, insurance & treatment costs
        Eugenia Liew
        Feb 14, 2020

Everyone is worrying about the novel coronavirus outbreak, but there's another virus that's spreading on the down low - dengue fever. As of today (Feb 11, 2020), there are a whopping 112 active clusters, 23 of which are "red" and have more than 10 reported cases since the start of the cluster.

The largest cluster is at Begonia Drive in Yio Chu Kang (166 cases), followed by Gangsa Road in Bukit Panjang (96 cases).

Even scarier is that according to reports, the current dengue season is caused by an uncommon strain of the virus, DenV-3. Because this strain has not been dominant in the past 3 decades, less people have immunity to it, hence increasing the transmission rates...

Singapore releases Wolbachia mosquitoes as dengue cases soar
          By Today Online - May 8, 2020 @ 1:22am

SINGAPORE: The National Environment Agency (NEA) will release male Wolbachia-carrying Aedes aegypti mosquitoes at 207 blocks of flats in Chua Chu Kang and Bukit Batok this month.

The selected neighbourhoods have high Aedes aegypti mosquito populations and are at greater risk of having dengue clusters forming there, NEA said in a statement on Wednesday.

From January to mid-April, almost 5,800 dengue cases were reported, more than double the figure for the same period in 2019...

Cases have more than doubled compared to the same period last year, topping 7,400 so far. Twenty people with ages ranging from 52 to 78 years died from dengue in 2019.

The NEA is expecting the number of infections to stay high and possibly further increase in the coming months...

New dengue virus serotype DENV3 has re-emerged in Singapore after three decades
                Reviewed by Emily Henderson, B.Sc.Jun 23 2020

Dengue infections are rising, even as public health authorities are battling to contain the spread of the coronavirus. Dengue virus serotype 2 (DENV2) had previously been the predominant serotype but DENV3 has re-emerged in Singapore after almost three decades. This means the Singapore population has lower immunity to DENV3 and, consequently, a large proportion of the population is susceptible to DENV3 infection.

So far, there are no highly protective vaccines or therapeutic agents that target DENV. This is due to the possibility that antibodies raised against any one of the four known serotypes (DENV1-4) may enhance disease severity when an individual is infected with a different serotype in a secondary infection...

SINGAPORE - Singapore is on track to record its worst dengue outbreak in its history this year.

More than 14,000 cases have been reported since Jan 1, with the total number expected to surpass the high of 22,170 reported in 2013, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said on Thursday (July 2).

Eight people died of dengue fever in 2013, while there have been 16 deaths so far this year.

Experts have noted that case numbers are expected to rise further as Singapore is right in the middle of the traditional peak dengue season between May and September.

The NEA said there were 334 active dengue clusters islandwide as at Wednesday, well up on the 205 clusters three weeks ago...

Low De Wei and Kevin Varley, Bloomberg News

(Bloomberg) -- Singapore is on track to record its worst dengue outbreak in history, with new weekly cases that have surpassed Covid-19 cases in the city-state.

Recorded cases of the disease reached 1,736 in the week ending July 18, the highest number of weekly infections ever recorded, according to the country’s National Environment Agency. Dengue, also known as break-bone fever, is spread via mosquito bites and can cause symptoms like fever and body aches.

Deaths from dengue are creeping up even as health authorities in the country continue to grapple with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. So far this year, 19 people have died of dengue, the Straits Times reported Monday,..

SINGAPORE — The number of weekly reported dengue cases dropped to 228 last week, the lowest weekly case number in 2020, as the severity of the outbreak continues to abate after a historic high.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) said a media release on Friday (18 December) that, as of Thursday, there have been 34,844 reported dengue cases this year, far surpassing the previous high of 22,170 reported for the whole of 2013.

However, the latest weekly dengue case number is about seven times lower than the peak of 1,792 seen in July. Last week’s figure is also the fourth successive week where case numbers have gone below 300.

“NEA would like to thank all our community stakeholders who have played a key role in leading dengue prevention efforts during this historic dengue outbreak year, in spite of the exceptional challenges posed by COVID-19,” said Chew Ming Fai, NEA’s deputy chief executive officer and director-general of public health...
