    Dengue and Chikungunya outbreak in P/ling and Samtse

    Phuentsholing General Hospital has reported of more than 100 cases of dengue fever until yesterday this month.

    The hospital saw most of the cases this week. Due to increased number of patients, the hospital had to keep extra trollies outside the emergency rooms to cater to those who couldn?t avail the beds. The number of cases dropped by the end of the week.

    Chief medical officer, Dr Thinley Pelzang said that preventive measure of thermal fogging started about five days ago. ?We want to advise people to avoid mosquito bites,? the doctor said.

    He said people should keep their surroundings clean and cover breeding sites...

    ...The hospital has also reported three cases of Chikungunya virus.

    ?The Royal Centre for Disease Control has confirmed of it,? Dr Thinley Pelzang said.

    Meanwhile, Chikungunya outbreak was also reported in Samtse. About four cases have been reported.

    With one more patient succumbing to dengue fever, the recent outbreak of dengue has claimed two lives while the number of affected are increasing.

    A 30-year-old man died yesterday at the intensive care unit of the Thimphu national referral hospital. The deceased is a resident of Phuentsholing where 1,239 confirmed dengue cases were reported as of Tuesday, August 20. The other victim was a 25-year-old woman from Tading, Samtse. She died on August 11.

    Meanwhile, a severe dengue outbreak has stricken residents of Phuentsholing. Phuentsholing general hospital reported 33 positive cases in one day, on August 19.

    There are four types of dengue fever. The most common in Phuentsholing and other affected parts in the country is ?the cerotype 2,? which is also the most threatening...

      As of August 29, the health ministry recorded 7,664 total cases suspected for dengue fever from 18 Dzongkhags with 87% of the cases from Phuentsholing alone ? the epicenter of dengue outbreak.

      The recent outbreak of dengue has reached 18 Dzongkhags (excluding Lhuentse and Bumthang) due to mobility of people from the two affected areas.

      ?Most of the dengue cases reported was through indigenous transmission from Duksum in Trashiyangtse and Phuentsholing in Chhukha, and secondary transmission has not happened in other Dzongkhags apart from these two areas,? said Director, Department of Public Health, Health Ministry, Karma Lhazeen, said during a dengue awareness workshop yesterday.

      Of the four deaths due to dengue this year, an 85-year-old woman had some infection and was bedridden and a 26-year-old girl had a heart problem.

        Dengue cases on the decline in P/ling
        Fewer dengue patients visit the hospital these days

        The situation at Phuentsholing general hospital is returning to normalcy.

        Corridors have fewer patients and staircases and benches are getting empty. Three months after the outbreak, dengue fever is now on the decline.

        Yesterday, the hospital recorded 23 positive cases, the lowest count on a day after the first case was reported on July 5. Hospital staff are also relived but the tasks to bring the outbreak under control is still underway.

        Dr Pema Letho said their intervention strategy now involves addressing the problems indoors.

        “Breeding centres have been destroyed,” the doctor said, explaining that mosquitoes were breeding inside people’s homes. “That was the most difficult task.”...

        ...About 32 percent of the total positive dengue cases were reported from Jaigaon, which health officials said was a major challenge.

        Until yesterday, Phuentsholing hospital recorded 3,041 dengue positive cases. The highest was reported in August with 1,337 positive cases. More than 1,000 positive cases among Bhutanese and non-Bhutanese were reported from private diagnostic centres in Phuentsholing.

        Starting September 28, the number of dengue positive cases reported in a day have not crossed 30, according to the report from the hospital.

        A total of 241 dengue patients were also admitted to the hospital and 21 referrals made to Thimphu...

          Dengue cases still on in P/ling

          More than three months after the dengue outbreak in Phuentsholing, health ministry is yet to declare the outbreak as contained.

          While the number of dengue fever cases in Phuentsholing hospital dropped drastically, the hospital continues to see about three to five cases daily. Until last month, the hospital recorded more than 20 positive cases almost every day.

          Since the July 5 outbreak in Phuentsholing, 4,300 dengue positive cases were reported as of yesterday. This includes two maternal deaths and six more deaths.

          Except for Lhuentse, all dzongkhags reported dengue cases...
