Cases of dengue and malaria increase in 302 and 179% in the first 2 months of the year.

Increases in the number of cases ranging from 302 percent to 179 percent recorded in the country in the first two months of the year compared with the same period last year, dengue and malaria, respectively, both diseases transmitted to humans by mosquito bites.
According to official figures, in the first eight weeks of 2019 the system captured 624 probable and confirmed cases of dengue fever for an increase of 302 percent over the same number of weeks in 2018, when 154 cases had been reported, of this viral disease that is transmitted by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which breeds in clean water accumulated in and around houses.
On the subject of malaria, the report indicates that up to epidemiological week eight, 79 confirmed cases were recorded for an increase of 179 percent compared to the same period last year, when 29 cases of this disease transmitted by a parasite carried to humans by the Anopheles mosquito, which breeds in stagnant, swampy water and has identified foci of presence in the country.
Seventy-eight percent of the probable and confirmed cases of dengue fever identified correspond to children under 15 years of age, and the highest frequency of cases occurs in residents of the municipalities of Santo Domingo Este, Santo Domingo de Guzm?n, Barahona and Santo Domingo Norte.
