Dengue claims 37 lives, affects 3,631 in Bicol

LEGAZPI CITY: In the span of seven months, dengue, the mosquito-borne disease has claimed 37 lives and afflicted 3,631 persons in in Bicol Region.
Based on the latest record of the Department of Health (DoH) in Bicol, dengue prevalence has reached an alarming situation, with a total of 3,631 cases and 37 deaths from January 1 to July 27 this year, as compared to 1,582 cases and 17 deaths in the same period of 2018.
Dr. Ernie Vera, DoH regional director said the Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (RESU) figure indicates a 134-percent increase from last year.
Among the six provinces of Bicol, Camarines Sur had the highest number of cases with 1,433, followed by Albay with 679, Sorsogon with 653, Catanduanes with 485, Masbate with 242, Camarines Norte with 135, and four cases in other provinces.
Vera said within the first two weeks of this month alone they recorded a 27-percent surge in dengue cases or from 2,660 to the current 3,631 cases.
Sixty-eight villages from five provinces of Bicol were declared dengue hot spot areas. These provinces are Camarines Sur with 30 villages followed by Sorsogon with 14; Albay, 12; Catanduanes, 7; and Masbate, 5...
