    02/27/2010 | 07:41 AM

While the nation's attention is focused on measles, dengue cases have spawned fears among Negros Occidental province's officials, who noted a 103-percent increase in the first two months of 2010, compared to the same period last year.

Provincial health officer Luisa Efren, in her report to Governor Isidro Zayco, said the cases were recorded from January 1 to February 13.

The report, excerpts of which were posted on the Visayan Daily Star, noted 183 dengue cases so far this year compared to 90 last year.

A breakdown showed Bacolod City had 45 cases, Cadiz City 30, Silay City 22, Sagay City 21, EB Magalona town 9, Escalante City 8, La Carlota City 7, Talisay City 7, Bago City 6, San Carlos City 4, Victorias City 4, Calatrava 3, Hinigaran 3, Manapla 3, Toboso 3, Himamaylan 2, Isabela 2, Kabankalan City 1, La Castellana 1, and San Enrique 1.

Efren said dengue cases are also expected to greatly increase during the rainy season.

The Health Department considers dengue a year-round threat. It advised residents to keep their surroundings clean and dry to prevent dengue-carrying mosquitoes from breeding. ? LBG, GMANews.TV

Dengue up 115 percent in Neg. Occ.
      BY CARLA GOMEZ

There has been a 115 percent increase in dengue cases in Negros Occidental in January and February this year compared to the same period last year, Dr. Luisa Efren, provincial health officer, said yesterday.

This year 174 patients were admitted in hospitals compared to 81 last year, she said.

Efren attributed this to parents? increased awareness of the need to bring their children to hospitals for treatment.

No deaths have been reported this year, unlike in January and February last year where one death was reported in Bago City and another in Calatrava, she said.

?We are happy that our information drives have increased awareness of the need for early dengue treatment to prevent deaths,? she added.

      Of the 174 dengue cases from January to February this year, Cadiz City had 34, Silay City ? 27, Sagay City ? 23, EB Magalona ? 12, Escalante City ? 12, Talisay City ? 10, Bago City ? 9, La Carlota City ? 8, Manapla ? 7, Victorias City ? 6, San Carlos City ? 5, Toboso ? 4, Calatrava ? 3, Hinigaran ? 3, Himamaylan City ? 2, Isabela ? 2, Murcia ? 2, Cauayan ? 1, Kabankalan City ? 1, La Castellana ? 1, San Enrique ? 1, and Valladolid ? 1.

Efren also stressed the need to follow the four Ss, which are seek and destroy breeding sites, practice self protection, seek early consultation and treatment, and, say no to indiscriminate fogging.*CPG

MANILA, Philippines -- Dengue cases went up to 6,236 cases in the first two months of 2010, an 11 percent-increase over last year's figures (5,616) in the same period, the National Epidemiology Center (NEC) of the Department of Health (DOH) said Monday.

A total of 46 dengue-related deaths were reported between January 1 and February 28, mostly in the 1-to-10 age group in Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Eastern Visayas, Metro Manila, and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Metro Manila topped the number of dengue cases with 1,210; followed by Central Visayas, 855; Eastern Visayas, 644; Southern Tagalog, 636; and the Davao provinces, 517.

According to the NEC, dengue cases ?went above the epidemic threshold in week 1 but went down to the alert threshold in weeks 2 to 5.?

Meanwhile, a total of 1,328 persons showing symptoms of measles were admitted to an undisclosed number of state-run and private hospitals nationwide during the past two months, according to the NEC.

However, only 742 of these were confirmed measles cases, the NEC clarified on Monday.

In a disease surveillance report, the NEC said the reported cases were ?234 percent higher compared to the same period in 2009.?

?Five died compared to only two deaths in 2009. Three of the fatalities belonged to the less than 9 months age group while one belonged to the 1 to 4 years age group,? the NEC also disclosed.

In its report, the NEC said most of the confirmed measles cases, mainly in the 1 to 4 years age level, were from the following regions: Metro Manila, 471; Southern Tagalog, 77; Bicol, 57; Central Luzon, 43; Western Visayas, 35; and Eastern Visayas, 14.

Measles outbreaks were also raised in Barangay 7, a village in Tanauan City, Batangas and Calategas village in Narra, Palawan, said the report.

Measles cases in Central Luzon posted an increase of 4,200 percent over 2009 figures, followed by Metro Manila cases, which increased by 659.7 percent; Mindoro-Marinduque-Romblon-Palawan by 500 percent; Southern Tagalog by 413.3 percent; and Eastern Visayas with 180 percent.

Metro Manila has the most number of recorded cases at 471, up by 659 percent from the same period last year, the NEC official said in its disease surveillance report. It is followed by Calabarzon with 77 cases, Central Luzon, 43 and Western Visayas, 35.

Areas with confirmed outbreak in Metro Manila as reported last week include: Barangay (village) 275, 210, 34, and 198 in Tondo; Barangay (village) 791 and 767 in San Andres Bukid, all in Manila; Filinvest Corporate City in Alabang; Barangay (village) San Antonio, San Dionisio, Purok 6, Cairo and Moonwalk in Para?aque; as well as Market 3 Fishport and NBBN in Navotas.

On the other hand, they decreased in Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao, and ARMM.

?Most of the reported measles cases nationwide (68 percent) had no reported history of measles immunization,? the NEC also said...

          March 14, 2010, 4:41pm

CEBU CITY ? Dengue cases in Cebu City for the first two months of this year have gone up to nearly 100 percent, with 316 recorded cases compared to only 161 cases during the same period last year.

Records of the Cebu City Epidemiology Statistics and Surveillance Unit (CESSU), however, indicated that during the first two months this year and in 2009, there were six fatalities who died from dengue fever.

The latest fatality this year was recorded last week after a three-year-old boy from Barangay Mabolo succumbed to the mosquito-borne disease, said CESSU Assistant Head, Durinda Macasocol.

She said the boy was brought to the Cebu Doctors Hospital but died on the same day because of "dengue shock."

Last month, three casualties were recorded from Barangays Bulacao, Tejero and Calamba while the two casualties in January were from Barangays Tejero and Pardo.

Overall, last year, there were 41 deaths as a result of dengue, lower than the 54 recorded in Cebu City in 2008.

            DoH lists 6,236 dengue cases
            By JENNY F. MANONGDO
            March 17, 2010, 4:26pm

The Department of Health (DoH) warned Wednesday the public on the spread of dengue after it listed 6,236 patients who were admitted in sentinel hospitals nationwide from January up to February 27.

The figure is 11 percent higher than the same period last year, the DoH said, with only 5,616 cases.

?Dengue is present all-year round and the public should not be complacent about it,? DoH Secretary Esperanza I. Cabral said in a conference.

The DoH has registered 46 deaths and majority of cases admitted in hospitals are males and 70 percent of those who were affected are within one to 20 years old.

Health officials noted clustering of cases in several areas in the country. Clustering of cases is declared when there are three or more dengue cases in a barangay during the past four weeks.

The areas with clustering of dengue cases include East Rembo in Makati, Malanday in Marikina, Sauyo and Novaliches in Quezon City, Poblacion in Lagawe, Ifugao, Dagatan in Lipa City Batangas.

Dr. Myrna Cabotaje, Department of Health DoH-CAR director, said the prolonged dry season should not be a reason for residents to be complacent in guarding against dengue-carrying mosquitos.

Citing figures from the DoH-CAR, Cabotaje said that from 103 reported cases in the first eight weeks of last year, dengue fever cases in the region has increased by 10 percent for the same period this year with 114 reported cases. BY ADRIAN NEMES III

Dengue cases in Bacolod City increased by at least 87 percent in the first quarter of 2010 compared to the same period last year, records from the City?s health office showed yesterday.

Acting City health officer Jovy Vergara said there were 159 dengue cases for the first quarter this year, while there were only 85 dengue cases last year.

Vergara, however, said that, compared to last year with 13 casualties, there were no reported deaths caused by dengue this year.

Of the 61 barangays in Bacolod, Estefania with 21 dengue cases topped the list, followed by Taculing and Brgy. 16 with 19 and 16 cases, respectively while, Barangays Granada, Bata, Mansilingan and Singcang-Airport had 10 dengue cases each.

Vergara also assured that the increase of dengue cases in Bacolod is not alarming as they are still on top of the situation, adding that the city health office?s mitigating measures are in place.

The City Health Office is sending an ?anti-dengue team? to the barangays with dengue cases, where they conduct investigation and locate the mosquitoes? breeding ground to destroy the larvae, Vergara said. He added that they also conduct fogging in the dengue-affected areas to kill adult mosquitoes.

Vergara said the aegis aegypti mosquitoes, carrier of the deadly disease, bite during sunset and sunrise only.

He also reminded the public to exercise proper container management and make sure to dispose of stagnant water in their houses so mosquitoes will have no breeding ground.*APN

Dengue cases increase; 5 deaths in Region 2

                    by Oliver T. Baccay

Tuguegarao City (28 April) -- Amidst El Nino phenomenon, dengue cases in Cagayan Valley Region went up with 5 fatalities in the first quarter of this year.

Dr. Marian Lynn De Laza, Department of Health Region 2, said from January to April 10, 2010, 277 cases were reported which is 19 percent higher as compared to last year with 5 deaths from different provinces of region 2.

However, De Laza cleared that the reported cases is below alert and endemic threshold level that is why no clustering and no outbreak were declared.

She informed that based on their monitoring the death cases were recorded from the municipalities of Claveria and Lasam, Cagayan; Ilagan, Isabela; Diadi, Nueva Vizacaya; and Maddela, Quirino.

She said 52% of the recorded cases were from the province of Cagayan, followed by Nueva Vizacaya-26% and Tuguegarao City- 22%.

"Most of the cases were listed from Cagayan. In terms of municipalities, Baggao recorded the highest number of cases", De Laza informed.

De Laza said they are conducting information dissemination and surveillance operations in the municipalities were most cases were recorded to educate the public on how to control the disease.

She further explained that even during severe drought there is no guarantee that there will be no dengue cases in the region.

She said there are findings in America that even during drought there are tiny mosquitoes that are carriers of dengue virus which can equally spread the viruses as that of mosquitoes during wet season. (PIA 2)

IPHO verifies ?dengue outbreak? in Tubungan town

                      By Montesa Gri?o-Caoyonan

TUBUNGAN, Iloilo ? A team from the Epidemiologic Surveillance Unit (ESU) of Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) visited Brgy. Cadapdap of this town yesterday to check the status of 15 suspected dengue cases initially reported from the said barangay.

According to IPHO assistant chief Ma. Socorro Qui?on, once her team confirms that those cases are positive, it means the area has dengue outbreak.

?An area with highest number of reported dengue cases is not a good indication,? she stressed.

Dengue is transmitted by Aedes egypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. These are day-biting mosquitoes that breed in clear, stagnant waters.

A total of four deaths were already recorded in Iloilo province from January up to the present.

Casualties came from towns of Guimbal, Oton, Pototan and one component city of Passi.

Once again, the IPHO reminds the public not to ignore simple fever.

Qui?on said that fever should be checked by physician so that early medication and treatment should be given.

Last year from January to June 10, a total of 286 dengue cases were already recorded by the IPHO.

So far, Qui?on said that they are expecting the number of dengue cases will increase during rainy season.

June is considered the month of rainy season; thus, the IPHO advised the public to clean their surroundings and to properly dispose tin cans, empty bottles, used tires and other containers that are potential breeding areas of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

In Western Visayas region, the Department of Health 6 (DOH-6) has so far recorded a total of 1,311 cases ? with seven deaths ? from January to May 8 this year.

Negros Occidental has the highest number of recorded cases at 380 with two deaths, followed by Bacolod City with 266 cases. Iloilo Province has 231 cases with four deaths, while Iloilo City has 126 cases.

There were 194 cases in Capiz, 79 in Aklan, with one death, 16 in Guimaras and 12 in Antique.

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan ? Health authorities here warned local residents and tourists on the sudden surge in the number of dengue fever cases in the province after the local department here recorded a 111-percent rise in dengue fever cases over the first five months of this year as compared with the same period last year.

From 90 cases for the first five months last year, the dengue fever cases this year increased to 191 which forced concerned authorities to issue the necessary advisories to the public to take the necessary preventive measures in order to abate the expected increase in the dreaded disease.

With the onset of the rainy season, provincial and health officials believe there will be a continuous rise in dengue fever cases because of the increase in stagnant water which is the favorite breeding ground of the dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

In order to abate a possible outbreak or epidemic of the dreaded disease in the coming months, the local health department reminded residents to observe cleanliness in their surroundings by removing the breeding ground of dengue-carrying mosquitoes, particularly their storage containers of water so that the mosquitoes will not breed on the said places.

At the same time, people suffering from flu-like symptoms must immediately seek medical attention in the nearest medical facility in their place so that they will be properly given medical attention to ascertain what kind of illness they are experiencing.
