Alpes-Maritimes: An "autochthonous" case of dengue detected in the department

    10/11/18
    • An "autochthonous" case, that is to say contracted on the national territory and not following a trip, of dengue was detected in Saint-Laurent-du-Var.
    • Epidemiological surveillance actions have been strengthened to identify other people who may be infected.
    • The ARS urges people to protect themselves against bites and to limit the spread of mosquitoes.

An "autochthonous" case of dengue, that is to say contracted on the national territory and not following a trip, was detected in the department of Alpes-Maritimes, announces this Thursday the Regional Agency of health (ARS) Paca and the prefecture of Alpes-Maritimes. "The person was taken care of by his doctor and is now cured," they said.

"To avoid any risk of spreading the virus," the Interdepartmental Agreement on Mosquito Control (EID) Mediterranean intervened "in the area where the patient lives" in Saint-Laurent-du-Var, a town bordering on Nice, according to our information.

An open survey of the neighborhood

"In parallel with the mosquito control system, the epidemiological surveillance actions have been reinforced to identify people who could be infected and find the person responsible for the transmission of the virus," also notes the ARS.
Several medical teams were formed to conduct a survey of the neighborhood of the case. Hospitals, treating physicians and also medical analysis laboratories are mobilized to identify other possible cases.

Limit mosquito proliferation and protect against bites

Other indigenous cases had already been reported in Paca in 2010 (2 cases), 2013 (1) and 2014 (2). The ARS calls on the population to protect themselves against bites and to limit the proliferation of mosquitoes (in particular by eliminating stagnant water). Due to the still high temperatures, their presence could last until December.
Dengue fever is a viral disease that can be transmitted by the bite of tiger mosquitoes (Aedes Albopictus) and is most often manifested by an influenza-like illness. Complications with a severe hemorrhagic form can sometimes occur.

Since July 7th, 22 cases of West Nile fever have also been reported in Paca. This disease, also due to a virus, is transmitted by Culex type mosquitoes.

H?rault: an autochthonous case of dengue in Clapiers, do you have to worry?

    11/10/2018

A case of dengue, a disease transmitted by the tiger mosquito, was identified this week in Clapiers (H?rault). This is an isolated and autochthonous case, that is, the person was infected at the beginning of the month when she did not travel to the tropics. Should we worry?

The Regional Health Agency (ARS) is reassuring: "No worries". "There is no special precaution to take". She says she has received about 100 reports of suspected cases since the spring, and this is the first proven domestic case. The patient, a septuagenarian, was initially treated for symptoms close to those of the flu: fever, joint pain, vomiting ... He is now recovered.

Mosquito control operations could also be undertaken in the coming days in the territory concerned. Native cases of dengue are very rare in France, the first were identified in 2010, says the Pasteur Institute. Another indigenous case was also identified this Thursday, October 11 in Saint-Laurent-du-Var, in the Alpes-Maritimes.

Alpes-Maritimes: new cases of dengue detected, the department on alert

Five indigenous cases of this disease, also called "tropical flu", were diagnosed in Saint-Laurent-du-Var, in the Alpes-Maritimes.

      22/10/2018

Five. This is the number of dengue cases detected in the Alpes-Maritimes. After the discovery of a first case on October 4, four other people were also identified on October 8 and 9, according to a statement issued by the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of Provence-Alpes-C?te-d'Azur.

These cases are said to be autochthonous , ie the disease was contracted in France and not during a recent trip. Originally present in the tropical and subtropical areas of the world, dengue fever is now established in Europe to the point that 50 million people are affected each year, according to figures from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Also known as "tropical flu" , dengue is linked to a virus that is transmitted through a tiger mosquito.

Cinq cas autochtones de cette maladie, ?galement appel?e "grippe tropicale", ont ?t? diagnostiqu?s ? Saint-Laurent-du-Var, dans les Alpes-Maritimes.
