Alpes-Maritimes: An "autochthonous" case of dengue detected in the department
10/11/18
An "autochthonous" case of dengue, that is to say contracted on the national territory and not following a trip, was detected in the department of Alpes-Maritimes, announces this Thursday the Regional Agency of health (ARS) Paca and the prefecture of Alpes-Maritimes. "The person was taken care of by his doctor and is now cured," they said.
"To avoid any risk of spreading the virus," the Interdepartmental Agreement on Mosquito Control (EID) Mediterranean intervened "in the area where the patient lives" in Saint-Laurent-du-Var, a town bordering on Nice, according to our information.
An open survey of the neighborhood
"In parallel with the mosquito control system, the epidemiological surveillance actions have been reinforced to identify people who could be infected and find the person responsible for the transmission of the virus," also notes the ARS.
Several medical teams were formed to conduct a survey of the neighborhood of the case. Hospitals, treating physicians and also medical analysis laboratories are mobilized to identify other possible cases.
Limit mosquito proliferation and protect against bites
Other indigenous cases had already been reported in Paca in 2010 (2 cases), 2013 (1) and 2014 (2). The ARS calls on the population to protect themselves against bites and to limit the proliferation of mosquitoes (in particular by eliminating stagnant water). Due to the still high temperatures, their presence could last until December.
Dengue fever is a viral disease that can be transmitted by the bite of tiger mosquitoes (Aedes Albopictus) and is most often manifested by an influenza-like illness. Complications with a severe hemorrhagic form can sometimes occur.
Since July 7th, 22 cases of West Nile fever have also been reported in Paca. This disease, also due to a virus, is transmitted by Culex type mosquitoes.
