Over 13,000 dengue cases reported in two months

Colombo, March 2 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka has logged a total of 13,416 dengue cases so far this year, the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) said.

According to Community Physician Specialist Dr. Prasheela Samaraweera of the unit, the highest number of cases have been reported from the Colombo and Gampaha districts, while cases have also emerged in Galle, Matara and Ratnapura.

Meanwhile, the official confirmed four deaths being reported so far...

The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) says that a total of 25,082 dengue cases have been reported across Sri Lanka so far in 2026.

Community Medical Specialist Dr. Prashila Samaraweera said the highest number of cases have been reported from the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Matara, Galle, Ratnapura and Kalutara, as well as the Colombo Municipal Council area.

She further stated that 12 dengue-related deaths have been reported so far this year...

Sri Lanka reports nearly 30,000 dengue cases and 15 deaths so far in 2026

Nearly 30,000 dengue cases have been reported across the country so far this year, according to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU).

Community Health Specialist Dr. Prashila Samaraweera said 29,589 dengue infections had been recorded by May 18, 2026, while 15 dengue-related deaths have also been confirmed during the same period.

Health authorities have identified 39 high-risk Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions as areas requiring urgent attention.

The Western Province has reported the highest number of cases, followed by the Southern and Sabaragamuwa provinces. Dengue infections have been reported in all 25 districts nationwide, with the highest numbers recorded in Colombo, Gampaha, Ratnapura, Matara, Galle, Kalutara and Kandy districts...

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Ministry of Health states that the reporting of dengue patients is rising rapidly.

The highest number of dengue cases is reported from the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces.

By now, the total number of dengue patients reported across the island stands at 33,864.

Over 45,000 Dengue Cases Reported As Risk Zones Expand

COLOMBO (News 1st): The number of MOH divisions at risk of a dengue outbreak has increased to 112.

The National Dengue Control Unit says the highest number of cases is currently being reported from the Maharagama MOH division.

Panadura in the Kalutara District and Biyagama in the Gampaha District have also been identified as areas where dengue is spreading rapidly.

Specialist Dr. Prashila Samaraweera said Colombo, Gampaha, Matara, Galle, Kandy, Ratnapura, and Kalutara districts have been identified as the most affected districts.

She noted that despite government intervention and ongoing dengue control programmes, community negligence in eliminating mosquito breeding sites remains a major challenge.

Dr. Samaraweera urged the public to prioritise cleaning their surroundings this weekend, given the high risk of further spread.

She warned that the situation could worsen if preventive measures are not followed.

The National Dengue Control Unit also said hospital wards in several districts have reached maximum capacity due to the rising number of patients...

Sri Lanka’s Dengue Outbreak Sees Daily New Cases Surpass One Thousand

As of the 23rd, Sri Lanka has reported 47,530 cases of dengue fever this year, with 29 deaths. On the 21st alone, new daily cases topped one thousand, reaching 1,069.

Kanangara, acting director of Sri Lanka’s National Dengue Prevention Unit, stated that the recent surge in dengue infections has led to a significant increase in hospital visits, placing immense pressure on the healthcare system.

Earlier, Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Health, Wijemuni, pointed out that one of the reasons for the recent rapid rise in dengue cases is the mutation of the virus strain.

He said that compared with the strains previously detected during dengue outbreaks in the country, the current circulating strain is more transmissible...

Dengue surge: Around 700 patients a day strain hospitals

Colombo, June 25 (Daily Mirror) - Hospitals are facing severe pressure as dengue infections surge across the country, with around 700 patients being reported daily based on the latest weekly figures, Doctors’ Trade Union Alliance for Medical & Civil Rights, Chairman Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa said today.

Addressing a media briefing in Colombo, he said data from the National Dengue Surveillance System showed that dengue cases in 2026 had increased fourfold compared to the previous two years.

He said the number of dengue patients had exceeded 5,000 per week by the 24th week of 2026, which was more than three times higher than the peak of around 1,500 weekly cases recorded in 2025.

Dr. Sanjeewa said dengue cases had shown a sharp increase from around the 18th week of this year, despite infections usually declining before the June-July monsoon period.

“This indicates that dengue control efforts have failed,” he said, claiming that hospitals including children’s hospitals and general hospitals were struggling with bed shortages and a shortage of medical staff...

Sri Lanka battles dengue surge as more than 52,000 infections sweep island

Sri Lanka has recorded more than 52,000 dengue cases this year, with 31 deaths reported by midnight on Saturday, June 27, as health authorities warn that a shift in the dominant virus strain and ongoing mosquito breeding are fueling the outbreak.

The increase in infections has been linked to the resurgence of Dengue Virus Serotype 2 (DENV-2), which now accounts for around 75 percent of confirmed cases. DENV-3, the dominant strain throughout 2023, 2024 and 2025, currently represents about 25 percent of infections, Xinhua reports.

National Dengue Control Unit Director Kapila Kannangara said DENV-2 is not a new strain, but one that persisted after the 2017 outbreak despite being brought under control. He noted that many people are now more vulnerable because immunity developed in recent years was primarily against DENV-3.

Kannangara also identified the impact of the November 2025 cyclone as a key contributor to the outbreak, saying floods, landslides and uncleared debris created favourable conditions for mosquito breeding...

Over 2,600 new dengue cases, largest number from Western Province

The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) yesterday reported 2,604 new dengue cases during the 24-hour period beginning at midnight on July 4, with the Western Province reporting the largest number of dengue positive cases.

According to the NDCU, the total number of confirmed dengue cases reported this year has exceeded 61,000, while 39 dengue-related deaths have been reported.

The Western Province has reported 32,054 cases, representing more than 52.5 percent of the total dengue positive cases. The Southern Province has recorded 9,674 cases, followed by the Sabaragamuwa Province with 5,237....

Sri Lanka records over 67,000 dengue cases, 47 deaths

Dengue-related deaths in Sri Lanka have risen to 47, while 67,143 dengue cases have been reported across the country so far this year.

According to statistics from the National Dengue Control Unit, 11,764 cases were recorded during the first 10 days of July alone, with around 1,110 cases reported on July 10.

More than 52% of the cases have been reported from the Western Province, with Gampaha district recording the highest number of dengue cases at 13,795, surpassing Colombo district, which reported 13,563 cases...
