South Africa: Free State Farmer Diagnosed With Congo Fever

    By Jeanette Chabalala, News24

Farmer Rudo Opperman is recovering at the Life Rosepark Hospital in Bloemfontein after being treated for Congo Fever.

According to his father Johan, the 25-year-old was bitten by a tick while working at the farm in the Wepener district.

"It all started a week ago on Friday [October 23] when Rudo was working with cattle at the farm, he was bitten by a tick which he saw on his hand, but he still carried on working," he said.

Opperman said that on Sunday [October 25] his son started complaining about fever and body aches, which the family suspected was the result of the tick.

"On Tuesday [October 27], he went to the doctor and he was treated for the tick bite. He felt better, but we later rushed him to the hospital on Friday [October 30]."

Opperman said doctors conducted multiple blood tests and confirmed on Saturday that his son had Congo Fever.

"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."
