    UPDATE: C. difficile outbreak reported

    Markham Stouffville Hospital has declared an outbreak of the potentially deadly bacteria C. difficile.
    In consultation with York Region Public Health, an outbreak was declared on two inpatient units Dec. 20, confirmed Lisa Joyce, the hospital?s director of public relations.
    While Ms Joyce declined to provide a specific number of patients affected by the bacteria, citing patient privacy and confidentiality, nine patients at one of the units were isolated at one point, according to a source...

    C. diff cases drop at hospital

    Markham Stouffville Hospital has declared a C. difficile outbreak at its Uxbridge site.
    The outbreak, affecting the inpatient unit of the 20-bed hospital, was declared Jan. 11, said Julia Scott, the hospital?s vice-president of clinical programs and chief nursing officer.
    There are two cases of C. difficile in Uxbridge in January, compared to its usual record of zero cases, Ms Scott said.
    Meanwhile, a C. difficile outbreak at the hospital?s Markham site is ongoing since it was declared on two inpatient units Dec. 20.
    However, Ms Scott said the number of cases has decreased to four this month from 14 in December.
    She said there is no connection of C. difficile cases between the two sites...
