TORONTO - The list of Ontario hospitals with a C. difficile outbreak is growing shorter.

Public Health officials say Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga is declaring an end to its outbreak with no new cases in seven days, leaving six hospitals still battling infection spread, most of them in the Niagara Region.

Ontario Health Minister Deb Matthews participated in a hospital hand washing exercise Thursday, highlighting one of several strategies used to combat the potentially deadly bacteria.

?We are determined to be ever vigilant because C. diff is not going to go away,? she said. ?C. diff is part of life in hospitals everywhere.?

Three sites of the Niagara Health System, St. Catharines General, Greater Niagara General and Welland, had 74 patients in hospital Thursday with cases of C. difficile that were acquired either in the facility or the community.

Guelph General, Headwaters Health Centre in Orangeville and Hotel Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Hospital in St. Catharines also have active outbreaks of the diarrhea-causing infection.

The overall number of hospitals with C. difficile outbreaks has dropped to six from 10 just a week ago...
