    C. difficile at Guelph General Hospital

GUELPH ? The Guelph General Hospital is asking visitors and staff to redouble efforts at good hygiene in the wake of rising cases of C difficile, a common infection threat in health care facilities.

The hospital hasn?t declared an outbreak and isn?t restricting visitation, however.

It announced seven patients were infected in May with the microscopic organisms, which cause diarrhea-like symptoms. That?s up from a more typical one or two cases a month....

    C. diff outbreak declared at Guelph General

GUELPH ? Following a spike in patient-acquired C. difficile cases at the Guelph General Hospital, including a patient who has since died, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health has declared an outbreak of the bacterial infection.

That?s in consultation with the acute care hospital, which detected seven cases of C. difficile or Clostridium difficile in May and a further four last month, up from a more typical one or two cases a month.

Hospital administration and the health unit, which have worked together for weeks monitoring the situation, are asking the public and staff to take precautions, notably hand sanitizing, but aren?t restricting access.

?We think in six weeks, this could be over,? hospital president and chief executive Richard Ernst said Tuesday by phone...

Death at Guelph, Ont., hospital linked to C. difficile outbreak
      The Canadian Press

GUELPH, Ont. - Another death has been linked to outbreaks of C. difficile in Ontario hospitals, bringing the province's toll to at least 21 since late May.

A spokesman for Guelph General Hospital says an elderly patient who tested positive for the infection died over the weekend.

Perry Hagerman says two more cases of the bug have been reported at the hospital since Friday...

Third person with C. difficile dies at Guelph General

GUELPH ? A third patient has died after contracting the Clostridium difficile bacterium at Guelph General Hospital.

The latest person to die, the hospital announced Thursday, was an elderly patient who contracted the virulent bacterium in June while in the hospital. Officials believe C. difficile may have been a contributing factor to the patient?s death, but not the clear cause. The patient died Thursday.

In all three deaths, the patients? health was already compromised by other diseases, making them more vulnerable, according to the hospital.

Guelph General Hospital president and chief executive officer Richard Ernst said hospital staff continues to work vigilantly to stem the C. difficile outbreak that began on May 4...

Grand River patients moved to isolate C. difficile case

KITCHENER ? A couple of patients at Grand River Hospital were moved after one patient on the fifth floor tested positive for C. difficile and had to be isolated Monday.

The patient who tested positive was in a four-patient room. Two patients were moved to another room, where they are being monitored for signs of C. difficile infection, and one was transferred to another facility.

Another patient with symptoms was isolated for potential infection, but tested negative.

Grand River currently has a total of seven cases of C. difficile, six at the main hospital and one at the Freeport site. Both sites combined have more than 560 beds.

?We are not in an outbreak,? said hospital spokesperson Mark Karjaluoto.

Provincial guidelines must be met for an outbreak to be declared. No hospitals in Waterloo Region have a declared outbreak, although several patients with C. difficile have died in Kitchener and Cambridge hospitals since May when hospitals across Ontario began reporting unusually high numbers of cases.

At Guelph General Hospital where there is a declared C. difficile outbreak, an elderly patient died last weekend after contracting the illness earlier this month while in hospital. One more case of hospital-acquired infection was also identified.

Since early May, there have been 16 cases of hospital-acquired infections in Guelph. Four people with C. difficile have died...

Fourth C. difficile death at Guelph General Hospital and another new case

GUELPH ? A fourth patient with hospital-acquired Chlostridium difficile has died at Guelph General Hospital and a new case was diagnosed over the weekend.

That brings the total of hospital acquired cases to 16 since the outbreak began in May, and means the four-week countdown to declaring the outbreak over, begins all over again.

Richard Ernst, the hospital?s chief executive, said the patient who died was elderly and had come to hospital with another condition.

?We don?t know if C. diff. was the cause of death, but it would have been a contributing factor,? Ernst said Monday. ?It?s really difficult on an elderly population.?

Ernst said of the 16 hospital acquired cases, four have died, seven have been discharged, and five are still in hospital...

              C. difficile reported at Grand River Hospital
              570 News Jul 19, 2011 15:37:56 PM

Grand River Hospital is reporting several new cases of C. difficile, but it is by no means an outbreak.

Spokesperson Mark Karjaluoto tells 570 news they are dealing, like many hospitals across the province, with some increased cases of the bacterial illness.

They are dealing with 5 cases at the KW site, and one at the hospital's Freeport site out of a total of 560 beds.

He says another patient with symptoms was isolated for potential infection, but tested negative...

                C. difficile patient discharged from Guelph General

GUELPH ? In one positive development amid an ongoing C. difficile outbreak, Guelph General Hospital discharged a patient Thursday with the hospital-acquired illness, president and chief executive Richard Ernst said.

Ernst said that leaves five patients with C. difficile at the hospital: four who acquired the bacterial infection while at the hospital for other medical reasons and one who contracted the disease in the community.

As a precaution, he appealed to the public to reconsider visiting patients at this time if they show symptoms of the gastrointestinal illness, which can cause severe diarrhea.

These include abdominal pain, watery diarrhea and/or abdominal tenderness.

?It might not be a good idea to visit,? he recommended...

GUELPH ? The Guelph General Hospital has released another patient who had a C. difficile bacterial infection, president and chief executive Richard Ernst said Friday.

That leaves just one patient with the hardy gastrointestinal illness remaining at the acute care hospital.

Since cases began rising from a normal one or two a month in May, the hospital?s reported a total of 17 cases,...

                        C. difficile outbreak seems to be waning at Guelph General Hospital

GUELPH ? Guelph General Hospital staff is cautiously optimistic the worst is over after a fairly calm weekend on the C. difficile front.

There were no deaths over the weekend related to the disease and no new hospital-acquired cases, hospital spokesperson Perry Hagerman said Tuesday. Two patients who had acquired it in the community were admitted for treatment...

Seventh C. difficile patient dies at Guelph General

GUELPH ? A patient who had C. difficile and other medical issues died this week at Guelph General Hospital.

That brings to seven the number of C. difficile patients who have died at the hospital of since early May. A total of 18 patients have tested positive for hospital-acquired C. difficile during that period.

The hospital officially declared an outbreak on July 5.

The complicating factor is that while provincial health authorities require hospitals to report hospital-acquired cases, C. difficile also occurs naturally in an estimated three to five per cent of the public.

That?s the case with the latest patient, who was admitted Monday and died Wednesday, the hospital reported Friday.

Hospital president and chief executive Richard Ernst said the patient had medical conditions that included C. difficile. The patient, who the hospital isn?t divulging personal information about because of privacy issues, ?had (C. difficile) when they came but was not admitted for this,? he said...
