Haiti - Cholera : 4 departments on red alert
              25/05/2016 10:30:10

Since May 10, cholera has reappeared in Baptiste, commune of the Central Plateau. Overwhelmed by the situation, officials of the commune health center asking for help to treat victims "The situation is becoming increasingly critical. We receive daily 3-5 people infected with cholera [...] We operate with the means at hand. We are obliged to refer some cases to Bellad?re [...] we do not have logistics," said Walter Elism?, administrator of the Commune health center who lamented also the insufficient staff to treat the sick, lack of drugs and equipment, including adapted beds and the cohabitation of cholera patients with other patients.

Mr. Elism? indicated that several localities are affected by the cholera epidemic, especially Louim?, Dyebabann, Cit? choublak, Maguayav, Aleyan, etc. According to him, we must quickly put in place a team that will make awareness and decontamination at the nearby localities to curb the spread of the epidemic...

Medics head to southwest Haiti as Cholera kills 13 in Matthew's wake

By Joseph Guyler Delva and Makini Brice | PORT-AU-PRINCE/LES CAYES, HAITI
Cholera has killed at least 13 people in southwest Haiti in the wake of Hurricane Matthew, government officials told Reuters on Saturday, as health workers sought to reach the epicenter of one outbreak.

Six people died of Cholera in a hospital in the southern town of Randel, which is inland near a river, and another seven died in the western coastal town of Anse-d?Ainault, the officials said, likely as flood waters mixed with sewage.

LONDON - The World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Tuesday that it was sending 1 million doses of cholera vaccine to Haiti, where cases of the killer disease have climbed in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.

"The top priority for those people affected by the hurricane is to give them access to clean water. That is the only way we can control cholera," Dominique Legros, WHO cholera expert, told a news briefing before travelling to the Caribbean country.

Some 150 suspected cholera cases have been reported in Grande'Anse department and 50 in South department, he said. "It is more than usual; I know it is a sharp increase compared to usual figures."...
