Zambia: 93 deaths from cholera since January (new report)

                    December 29

Lusaka, 12/29/2023 -(MAP)- The death toll caused by the cholera epidemic that has hit Zambia since the start of the year has risen to 93, while infections have reached more than 3,400 cases, the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) said on Friday.

“Five additional people died from cholera in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative total of deaths to 93 since January,” the institute said in its latest bulletin on the epidemic situation in the country.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka on Thursday, Health Minister Sylvia Masebo said government is concerned about the spread of cholera, with several cases reported in the Eastern, Central and Southern provinces. North.

Stressing that 12 districts are affected by the epidemic, she said that 207 patients are currently admitted to various cholera treatment centers across the country.

Furthermore, Ms. Masebo urged citizens to strengthen preventive measures, particularly through the consumption of clean water, respect for hygiene and early consultation of health authorities in case of doubt.

For his part, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Gary Nkombo, said that in response to the surge in contamination, the government decided to impose a ban on street vending.

For his part, the Minister of Water and Sanitation Development, Mike Mposha, highlighted that the authorities have installed water tanks in underserved areas to provide drinking water, while 20,000 latrines pit will be cleaned in Lusaka.

Zambia has not experienced a cholera outbreak since 2019, notably due to preventive interventions implemented under the National Multi-Sectoral Cholera Elimination Plan. Nevertheless, the country remains vulnerable to imported cases and internal outbreaks.

LUSAKA, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government on Tuesday appealed for support in its response to the cholera outbreak as cases of the waterborne disease continue to surge.

Minister of Health Sylvia Masebo said the sharp rise in cholera cases has put a strain on government resources hence the need for support from other stakeholders.

In remarks delivered when she received various items from Trade Kings Foundation, a charity of Trade Kings, a local firm, and the Muslim Social and Welfare Trust, Masebo said the government requires financial and material support to ensure success in the cholera response.

We are in Lusaka and immediately met the responders to the cholera outbreak. We pass our condolences to the families that have lost their loved ones to the disease. We commiserate with them.

We are grateful to the World Health Organization for supporting us with the vaccines so far, as we look at manufacturing our own vaccines in the near future.

We further call on all citizens to help each other and seek medical attention quickly. No one must be stigmatized for suffering from the disease. We are marshaling everyone and everything at our disposal to ensure that this matter is brought under control.

Cholera is no longer at the back of the queue, going forward we are opening up roads and drainages including addressing the issue of plastics that clog drainage.

We call on everyone to get involved at this critical time.
