A Collier County woman who traveled to visit family in Haiti's disease-stricken Artibonite Valley has become Florida's first local case of cholera transmitted from the beleaguered country, where the disease has killed nearly 1,000 and hospitalized more than 9,000.

``She's doing quite well,'' said Dr. Thomas Torok, a cholera expert in the Florida Department of Health's Bureau of Epidemiology. ``Additional cases are under investigation in several counties.''

Torok declined to identify the woman, except to say she does not work in a job that puts her in close contact with the public, so the chance that she might pass on the disease is very small. He said she returned from Haiti about a week ago showing cholera symptoms, and the Collier County Health Department confirmed the case and sent samples on to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta for further testing.

Hard to know. I am not familiar with that news group. I think there is probably more than 1 case in Florida given the amount of travel between Haiti and Florida. But the public health system is fairly good in here and some may recover without a diagnosis of cholera.

Air passenger from Haiti at Miami International Airport may be suffering from cholera

Health officials late Thursday were investigating the possibility that a passenger suffering from cholera arrived at Miami International Airport on a flight from Haiti.

The man, whose name was not released, was a passenger on an American Airlines flight sometime after 6 p.m., sources told The Miami Herald.

He was said to be ill during the flight and told airline officials he was a doctor who had been treating patients in Haiti and believed he had contracted the disease.

Earlier this month, a Collier County woman who had returned from Haiti was found to be suffering from the disease. She has recovered. A second case is suspected but has not been officially confirmed.

The man, whose name was not released, was a passenger on American Airlines Flight #778 from Santo Domingo to Miami, not directly from neighboring Haiti, where an outbreak of cholera in recent weeks has killed hundreds of people.

The Boeing 767-300 arrived in Miami at around 6 p.m. on Thursday.
``Before landing, the crew radioed down and advised they had a passenger onboard who had symptom that appeared to be cholera and he would need immediate medical attention the minute they landed,'' said Tim Smith, spokesman for American Airlines in Fort Worth, Tx.

Emergency workers at MIA were waiting for the flight. The man was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital. It has not been confirmed the man has cholera pending medical testing.

The carrier immediately notified the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Smith said. Other passengers on the flight should not be affected.

A doctor returning from fighting a cholera outbreak in Haiti experienced symptoms of the disease while en route to Miami International Airport and was met by a medical team when his flight touched down Thursday night.

If suspicions are confirmed, it will be the first known case of cholera in Miami-Dade County ever and just the third in Florida -- the disease was erradicated in most first-world countries decades ago.

Though passengers leaving Haiti and the Dominican Republic are being screened at departure for symptoms of the disease, the patient in question showed no signs of illness before the flight took off and thus was allowed to board.

Woman is first recent cholera case locally, Orange health officials say

A woman who recently moved from Haiti to the Orlando area has been diagnosed with cholera, but county health officials say she has been treated with antibiotics and has recovered.

The woman, whose identity is protected by privacy statutes, moved to Orange County within the past month. Health officials say the disease did not spread to her family members or close friends.

The case of cholera was identified through the state's disease-surveillance system, and a laboratory sample was sent to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where it was confirmed.

The Orange County woman's illness was the second confirmed case of cholera in Florida, according to the state's Department of Health. Health officials are investigating a third possible case involving a doctor returning from Haiti. So far, all the cases of cholera reported in the U.S. have been in Florida.
