Syria reports 2 dozen cases, 3 deaths of cholera
      10 minutes ago

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Hospitals in the Syrian capital have been put on alert after more than two dozen cases of cholera and at least three deaths were reported in the war-torn country, health officials said Monday.

The main cause of the spread appears to be people drinking polluted water as well as watering plants in some areas with unclean water.

Syria’s infrastructure has suffered severe damage since the country’s conflict began in March 2011 where residents of some areas have no access to clean water. The conflict had killed hundreds of thousands and displaced half the country’s pre-war population of 23 million, many of them living in tent settlements around the country.

        AFP

Syria’s first major cholera outbreak in over a decade has killed seven people and infected more than 50, the health ministry said, amid widespread damage to water treatment infrastructure.

In a statement late Tuesday, the ministry confirmed 53 cholera cases spread across five of the country’s 14 provinces, with the highest number recorded in the northern province of Aleppo.

It said seven people had died of the illness.

The updated toll comes after the ministry reported two confirmed cholera deaths on Monday...

          the health

Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that the United Nations in Syria calls on donor countries to secure more urgent funding to contain the outbreak of cholera and prevent it from spreading. The number of confirmed cases so far has reached 20 in Aleppo, four in Lattakia and two in Damascus (for people coming from Aleppo).

At the daily press conference from the permanent headquarters in New York, Dujarric said that Mr. Imran Rida, who currently remains the Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria, expressed his grave concern about the continuing cholera outbreak in Syria.

Quoting Mr. Reda, Dujarric said: “ We urge all concerned parties to ensure sustainable and unhindered access to affected communities, as well as support from neighboring countries to expedite the approval of the necessary approvals to ensure the timely delivery of life-saving medicines and medical supplies.

          Most cases are in Aleppo

In a statement by Omran Reda issued on Monday, it was found that on September 10, the Syrian Ministry of Health announced an outbreak of cholera in Aleppo Governorate after 15 laboratory confirmed cases, including one death, were recorded.

Between August 25 and September 10, monitoring data showed that 936 cases of acute watery diarrhea were reported in Syria, including at least eight deaths. Most of the cases were reported: from Aleppo (72.2 percent, 676 cases), from Deir al-Zour (21.5 percent, 201 cases) from Raqqa (1.8 percent, 17 cases), Hasaka (4.1 percent, 38 cases) and Hama ( 0.2 percent, two cases) and Latakia (0.2 percent, two cases).

Based on a rapid assessment by health authorities and partners, the source of infection is believed to be related to people drinking unsafe water from the Euphrates River, as well as using contaminated water to irrigate crops, leading to food contamination.

Cholera remains a global public health threat and an indicator of inequality. The outbreak of the disease poses a serious threat to people in Syria and the region, so quick and urgent action is needed to prevent further illness and death.

The cholera outbreak is also an indication of severe water shortages across Syria. For a while, the United Nations sounded the alarm on this issue. With the Euphrates River levels continuing to decline and drought-like conditions and water infrastructure damaged, many of the already vulnerable populations in Syria depend on unsafe water sources, which may lead to the spread of serious waterborne diseases, especially among children.

Water shortages are forcing families to resort to negative coping mechanisms such as changing hygiene practices or increasing household debts to pay for water.

A coordinated response is in the works

Mr. Reda confirmed that a closely coordinated response in the field of WASH, hygiene and health is being prepared, led by the Ministry of Health, with support from WHO and UNICEF, working with a wide network of response field partners. Since late August, health partners have been actively working to strengthen the capacity to prepare for and respond to potential disease outbreaks in all affected governorates.

Early warning monitoring has been intensified in areas where outbreaks have been reported and in other high-risk areas, including in camps hosting IDPs.

In addition, 4,000 rapid diagnostic tests were delivered to support the work of the deployed rapid response teams to verify suspected cases. Intravenous solutions and oral rehydration salts were also delivered to health facilities, where confirmed patients were received.
Partners mobilized the supplies of both the health sector and the WASH sector in the affected governorates. Chlorination activities to sterilize water are being expanded and sterilization rates are being increased in communities most vulnerable to the disease, to limit its spread. Clean water is also tanked to the affected sites.

Encourage the practice of good hygiene

Partners collaborate with local authorities to initiate periodic and focused water testing and support water sampling. Information on locating the nearest drinking water pumping station is provided to affected communities that do not have sustainable access to drinking water.

Religious leaders, community leaders, and local volunteers were encouraged to encourage good hygiene practices and help refer suspected cases to health facilities. Orientation sessions with health care workers, home visits, and community dialogues are part of community outreach efforts to provide families with accurate information and to improve reporting of symptoms and seeking treatment.
Partner UN agencies and NGOs are coordinating closely with health authorities to ensure a timely and effective response.

Cholera death toll rises to 29 in Syria as outbreak spreads
Health Ministry says rapid assessment testing confirmed 338 cases since the outbreak was first recorded last month.
              26 Sep 2022

At least 29 people have been killed due to a cholera outbreak in several regions of Syria, in what the United Nations has called the worst outbreak in the war-torn country for years.

Rapid assessment testing confirmed 338 cases since the outbreak was first recorded last month, with the bulk of deaths and cases in the northern Aleppo province, the Syrian health ministry said in a statement on Monday.

230 cases were reported in Aleppo province, with 25 people confirmed dead.

The UN this month said the outbreak was believed to be linked to the irrigation of crops using contaminated water and people drinking unsafe water from the Euphrates River, which bisects Syria from north to east...

First major cholera outbreak in years in Syria

Syria's first major cholera outbreak in more than a decade has killed around 40 people in less than a month, amid water shortages and conflict-induced damage to water treatment infrastructure.

In less than a month, Syria has counted around forty deaths and nearly 10,000 suspected cases, according to figures from the Ministry of Health. For the NGOs on the ground, these figures are largely underestimated because, in the areas ravaged by the fighting and in the refugee camps, it is impossible for the population to be diagnosed or to have access to water.

Interviewed by RTS, Ahmad Moussa, a farmer who lives in Tal Abiad in northern Syria, testified to the difficulty of obtaining treatment in this region ravaged by war.

Touched by the disease, he explains that hospitals lack space to quarantine infected people and the treatments available in pharmacies are out of price for the population. Ahmad Moussa was cured thanks to the help of an association which provided him with treatment. But around him, the cases are multiplying.

                  “Immense danger for the region”

"Cholera represents an immense danger for the region. It is transmitted by contacts, the vegetables we eat, water," says Hammadi, who works for the NGO MedGlobal in Syria. "With the increase in the number of cases across the country, the epidemic is in danger of spiraling out of control. Moreover, no one wants to say that they are sick for fear of being placed in quarantine", specifies- there at the RTS. Indeed, a sick person is one less source of income for a family. However, in this country crushed by eleven years of conflict, nine out of ten Syrians live on less than two euros a day.

"After years of decline, we are seeing a worrying upsurge in cholera epidemics worldwide over the past year," said the WHO team leader for epidemic cholera and diarrheal diseases. , Philippe Barboza, during a press briefing in Geneva on September 30. “Not only are there more epidemics, but the epidemics themselves are larger and more deadly,” he noted.

                  Fatality rate three times higher

According to the WHO , the average cholera-related fatality rate recorded in 2021 is almost three times higher than in the previous five years. In Syria, the spread is extremely rapid.

But the Organization does not have data on the number of deaths linked to cholera due to a lack of statistics available in the affected countries, including Syria, Iraq, Iran, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa area.

                  Lack of vaccines

Without treatment, you can die within hours. But most infected people will have no or only mild symptoms and can be successfully treated with oral rehydration salts. Vaccines are available but not enough because demand exceeds supply.

Cholera, an acute diarrheal infection causing sometimes fatal dehydration, is contracted by the absorption of water or food products contaminated with the bacterium vibrio cholerae. It develops in areas that are often populated, with limited access to drinking water or without suitable sanitation networks.

DAMASCUS, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Cholera infections in Syria have largely been contained following the measures taken by the health authorities countrywide and at border points, a Syrian health official said on Tuesday.

Zuhair al-Sahwi, director of communicable and chronic diseases at the Syrian Health Ministry, made the remarks after a tour for the journalists to the Ibn al-Nafis hospital in the Syrian capital Damascus.

Al-Sahwi said every suspected case was being dealt with seriously, and the necessary tests were being made to tell if a diarrheal patient had contracted cholera.
