.Haiti cholera epidemic reaches Dominican Republic
    Wednesday 17 November 2010 .
Fears are growing that Haiti's cholera epidemic has spread to neighbouring Dominican Republic after health officials confirmed a man was hospitalised with the condition yesterday.

The unidentified man, a Haitian national, had travelled back from Haiti to the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic by road, according to Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez.

"The patient has been handled with the protocol these cases require and he is in stable condition in a hospital in Higuey," the minister said.

Mr Gomez said that the man, who is thought to be a 32-years-old, is a manual worker who commutes across the border by bus to a construction job in Higuey, the country's so-called Capital of Tourism, 140 kilometres (87 miles) east of the capital Santa Domingo.

Following the first case of cholera reported in the Dominican Republic, Dominican President Leonel Fernandez convened an emergency meeting to take stock, with a group of important ministers, on the effectiveness of measures adopted to fight against the spread cholera.

Bautista Rojas Gomez, the Minister of Public Health, accompanied among others: Sigfrido Pared, Director of Immigration and Virgilio Felix, armed forces minister, made the announcement at a press conference of several additional measures to strengthen those already in place.

Disinfection systems for vehicles (jetting of chlorinated water) and people (latrines and hand washing device, soaps, chlorine) will be installed at the entrance of the Dominican territory, to the 4 border (Dajab?n, Pedernales El?as Pi?a and Jiman?). Carpets impregnated with chlorine will disinfect vehicle tires and the soles of shoes of people entering the Dominican Republic. The Minister also gave instruction to increase the amount of chlorine in the public water supply.

A reinforced military cordon, in addition to the health system, will prevent the passage of unauthorized persons. The intensification of surveillance has been decided following the declaration of three new cases of cholera in the border town of Ouanaminthe (Haiti), located 600 meters from the Dominican province of Dajab?n where population shows great concern...

Haiti cholera to spread to Dominican Republic: WHO

            Fri Nov 19, 2010

(Reuters) - Haiti's cholera epidemic will inevitably spread to the Dominican Republic but is likely to cause less devastation there, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday.

Many Haitians work in the Dominican Republic and because cholera infections often do not show symptoms, the water-borne disease could easily cross the border, WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl told a U.N. news briefing in Geneva.

"It is completely expected that there will be cases in the Dominican Republic. We are seeing the first signs of these cases and we are working with the government of the Dominican Republic to prepare," Hartl said. He estimated the number of infections as "still in single digits, probably."

A 20 year old resident in Santo Domingo yesterday became the fourth country confirmed patient diagnosed with cholera, but like others their condition is stable and recovering at home.

Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez, said the patient was treated initially in the hospital San Lorenzo de Los Mina, but is now well at home, where he followed up.

He explained that it is presumed that she and the other two patients diagnosed with cholera Dominican infected through food, and that in seeking new contacts were not found, while water studies showed that no contamination.

The official said the health system is prepared to address issues that may arise and it is presumed that the highest incidence was recorded in the province of Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, Santiago and HIGUER ? ey, because that is where there is a greater concentration population and Haitian nationals.

                  Cholera in Dominican Republic

                  Released: November 25, 2010

                  Travel Health Notice

The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with the neighbouring country of Haiti. Haiti has been experiencing an outbreak of cholera. There have been four confirmed cases of cholera in Dominican Republic and there are also a number of suspected cases.

In response, the government of Dominican Republic has a national plan aimed at preventing and controlling cholera outbreak in the country. This response includes enhancing surveillance, water and sanitation services and education. They are also focussing on prompt and appropriate care for those who become infected.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (<ACRONYM title="Public Health Agency of Canada">PHAC</ACRONYM>) recommends practising safe food and water precautions and advises speaking with a health care provider about cholera vaccine. PHAC does not recommend avoiding travel to the Dominican Republic.

Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. People usually become infected from drinking or eating contaminated water or food. It is associated with watery diarrhea and rapid dehydration, which may be life-threatening.

                  Recommendations

Consult a doctor, nurse or health care provider, or visit a travel health clinic at least six weeks before you travel.
                  1. Practise safe food and water precautions
                  2. Consider getting vaccinated
                    1. Those travellers who may be at high risk for cholera (humanitarian relief workers, travellers visiting areas of high risk with limited access to clean water and food) should consult with a health care provider to discuss the benefits of getting vaccinated.
                  3. If you develop severe diarrhea and/or vomiting when you return to Canada
                    1. Infants, young children and the elderly and those with underlying health conditions are at greatest risk of dehydration.
                    2. Seek medical attention immediately.
                    3. Drink fluids and use oral rehydration salts to prevent dehydration.
