The death toll from the current cholera outbreak in Harare?s high-density suburbs of Glen View and Budiriro has risen to 10, with health officials tracing the source of the disease to a burst sewer pipe that was contaminating borehole water used by residents in the affected areas, the Harare City Council (HCC) said yesterday.

There are fears that the diarrhoeal disease, which has been confirmed in Glen View and Budiriro, could have spread to Glen Norah.
By end of day yesterday, 320 people had been hospitalised. Two hundred and twenty three patients are presently admitted in Glen View, while 100 are receiving treatment at Beatrice Road Infectious Diseases Hospital...

Zimbabwe declares cholera outbreak after 20 deaths, over 2 000 cases
                    2018-09-11 16:52

A cholera emergency has been declared in Zimbabwe's capital after 20 people have died, the health minister said on Tuesday.

The deaths in Harare have many fearing a repeat of the outbreak that killed thousands at the height of the southern African country's economic problems in 2008. Water and sanitation infrastructure is collapsing.

While touring a hospital, Health Minister Obadiah Moyo told reporters this outbreak is spreading to other parts of the country...

HARARE: The death toll from a cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe has risen to 25, the government said Thursday as the World Health Organisation warned that the water-borne disease is spreading rapidly in the capital Harare.

?There are now 3,766 cases. The number of deaths is now 25,? Health Minister Obadiah Moyo told journalists.

The WHO said it was ?scaling up its response? to contain the outbreak which it said was ?expanding quickly in Harare? ? a city of more than two million people.

At least one of the deaths was recorded outside the capital, in the southeast district of Masvingo...

The death toll from a cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe has risen to 25 with first-line antibiotics struggling to treat the disease which has spread from the capital, a World Health Organisation (WHO) report said on Thursday.

?A cumulative of 25 deaths were reported from the onset of outbreak,? the report said, with 24 deaths in Harare and one death in the southeast district of Masvingo.

?There is resistance to the first-line medicine,? it added, with tests suggesting antibiotic drugs ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone could be ineffective and the alternative drug azithromycin was not available...
