Yemen's cholera cases to reach one million by years' end

GENEVA: The humanitarian situation in Yemen is a "catastrophe", and cholera cases could reach a million by the end of the year, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Friday.
Warring parties in Yemen ? including the western-backed Saudi-led coalition ? are all using disproportionate force, leading to "very excessive" civilian casualties, said Alexandre Faite, the head of the Red Cross delegation in Yemen.
In addition, suspected cases of cholera have reached 750,000, with 2,119 deaths, Faite said, and the Red Cross expects at least 900,000 cases by the end of the year.
"The situation has really evolved in a very dramatic way and I think that it's nothing short of a catastrophe," Faite told a news briefing in Geneva...

It had already become the world?s biggest cholera outbreak in recent history, but now the number of suspected cholera cases in Yemen since April has hit 1 million, and at an incredibly fast speed. The International Committee of the Red Cross announced the record yesterday on its official Twitter account, describing it as ?shocking.?
?More than 80 percent of the population lack food, fuel, clean water and access to health care,? it said, pointing to some of the underlying causes of the disease...

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has said that the total number of cholera fatalities in Yemen had surpassed 2,300 within the past 13 months amid the ongoing conflict in the impoverished country.
"In spite of the progress made in responding to the cholera outbreak, the ailing health system and ongoing conflict could compromise such efforts," UNICEF's Yemen office tweeted. "In over 13 months, the cumulative total of reported suspected cholera cases is 1,118,381 with 2,311 associated deaths across Yemen," it added...

Yemen cholera outbreak accelerating at alarming rate

GENEVA ? Yemen?s cholera outbreak ? the worst in the world ? is accelerating again, with roughly 10,000 suspected cases now reported per week, the latest data from the World Health Organization (WHO) showed on Tuesday.
That is double the average rate for the first eight months of the year, when 154,527 suspected cases of cholera ? which can kill a child within hours if untreated ? were recorded across the country, with 196 deaths.
WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said 185,160 suspected cholera cases were reported into September...
