UNICEF Supports Health Centres in Yemen to Respond to Cholera Outbreak
    Report
    from UN Children's Fund
    Published on 07 Oct 2016

SANA?A, 7 October 2016 - Health authorities in Yemen confirmed a cholera outbreak on Thursday, 6 October, posing an increased health risk to the population-especially children-given the crumbling health system in the country.

?This outbreak adds to the misery of millions of children in Yemen. We are supporting health centres to prevent and treat cholera cases and will continue working with partners to scale up the response and stem out this dangerous disease?, said UNICEF Representative in Yemen, Julien Harneis.

Health authorities announced that cholera cases have been confirmed in the capital, Sana?a while others are suspected in the southwestern city of Taiz. UNICEF and partners are working to establish the exact scale of the outbreak. If not treated, severe cases of cholera can kill up to 15% of people affected in just a few hours...

Yemen Cholera Outbreak Situation Report #2
        Report
        from UN Children's Fund
        Published on 24 Oct 2016

? As of 23 October, 31 cases of cholera have been confirmed, in Amant Al Asimah, Aden, Lahj, Al Bayda, Sana?a and Hajjah governorates. Including 15 children under 15 years.

? According to preliminary information, 32 deaths related to Acute Watery Diarrhoea have been reported in six governorates.

? At least 7.6 million people are estimated to be living in affected and at-risk areas. Given the poor sanitation conditions of many communities in Yemen, particularly the ones hosting large number of internally displaced people (IDPs), the situation is likely to worsen rapidly in the coming days.

? UNICEF, with partners, is responding in affected and at-risk areas, through Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Health and Communication for Development (C4D) activities.

? Since 9 October, over 52,000 people have been reached with additional WASH services provided by UNICEF and more than 60,000 community members have been sensitised through C4D activities...

Yemen's suspected cholera cases soar to 1,410 within weeks -WHO
          by Reuters
          Friday, 28 October 2016 11:13 GMT

GENEVA, Oct 28 (Reuters) - The number of suspected cholera cases in Yemen has ballooned to 1,410 within three weeks of the outbreak being declared, the World Health Organization said on Friday, as 18 months of war has destroyed most health facilities and clean water supplies.

Yemen's Health Ministry announced the outbreak on Oct. 6 in Sanaa city, and by Oct. 10 the WHO said there were 24 suspected cases. The following day, a WHO official in Yemen said there was "no spread of the disease".

But on Friday, WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told a Geneva news briefing that as of Thursday there were 1,410 suspected cholera cases in 10 out of Yemen's 23 governorates - mostly in Taiz, Aden, Lahj, Hodeida and Sanaa.

The conflict between a Saudi Arabia-led coalition and the Iran-aligned Houthi group which controls much of northern Yemen, including Sanaa, has destroyed much of Yemen's infrastructure, killed more than 10,000 people and displaced millions...

Yemen: Cholera Outbreak Situation Report No. 2 (as of 1 November 2016)
            Report
from UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs
            Published on 01 Nov 2016

This report is produced by OCHA Yemen in collaboration with humanitarian partners. It covers the period from 13 October ? 1 November 2016. The next report will be issued as additional information becomes available.

            Highlights

Cholera is spreading throughout Yemen. 71 cases have been confirmed in 11 governorates; eight people have already died in three governorates; and there are over 2,000 suspected cases across the country.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 7.6M people live in high risk areas, with projected case estimates up to 76,000 people.

19 months of conflict and import restrictions have crippled the capacity of the national health system to respond.

23 treatment centers have been established in nine governorates; 16 will follow.

The overall cost of the Yemen Integrated Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD)/Cholera outbreak Response Plan stands at $22M.
