Ecuador: the cholera outbreak continues to spread
Published 47 minutes, under News, Ecuador, Health.
Fifteen new cases of cholera were recorded in the night of Monday to Tuesday, July 12 in Mbandaka, the capital of Equateur province. To date, at least 540 cases in total including 47 deaths were recorded throughout the province of Ecuador, according to medical sources. In May 2011, the cholera epidemic was declared in Ecuador. When the epidemic was declared in May, ten health zones were affected, said the provincial medical inspector of Ecuador, Dr. Joseph Mboyo Lipoko.
Currently, fourteen health zones along the river are affected by cholera, he said.
A provincial inspection of Health is concerned that organized the response does not seem to slow the spread of the epidemic.
In addition, Dr. Joseph Mboyo indicates that new cases of diarrhea are reported to Bomongo, Djombo, and Irebu Apimo.
Without a prior analysis laboratory, said he, these cases can not be assimilated to cholera.
It also regrets the lack of care for patients of cholera living in areas far from urban centers of Ecuador.
Dr. Joseph Mboyo says his teams do not have the logistics to deliver drugs fast in areas of health affected by the epidemic, including Lukolela, Lisala, and Bosonzo Apimo.

More than 3,000 cases of cholera have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since March, the United Nations reported today, saying that thedisease had claimed the lives of 192 people since it was first reported in the north-eastern city of Kisangani, from where it spread downstream along River Congo.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and partners are helping the Government to organize hygiene promotion campaigns, set up water chlorination points and to ensure that those infected get free treatment, the spokesperson for Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Martin Nesirky, told reporters at UN Headquarters.
The disease has spread to the provinces of Equateur, Bandundu and the capital, Kinshasa.
The UN Office for the Coordination of the Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), meanwhile, reported that although Bandundu remains the worst affected province ? with 1,271 cases and 72 deaths as of 4 July ? cholera has been spreading quickly in Kinshasa.
Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with the bacterium known as vibrio cholerae. The disease has a short incubation period and produces a toxin that causes continuous watery diarrhoea, a condition that can quickly lead to severe dehydration and death if treatment is not administered promptly. Vomiting also occurs in most patients.
The disease remains a global threat and is one of the key indicators of social development, according to WHO. While cholera no longer poses a threat to countries with high standards of hygiene, it remains a challenge in countries with limited access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation.

According to the latest figures provided Sunday by the WHO, more than 3,500 cholera cases, nearly 200 deaths have been recorded in areas affected by the epidemic in the DRC. These figures do not take into account endemic areas such as two-Kivu and North Katanga.
In less than ten days, the number of patients increased from 2000 to over 3500 over the whole of the DRC, an increase of over 75%, says WHO.
Bandundu province leads with more than 1300 cases of cholera. The city-province Kinshasa, Bandundu nearby, is also under serious threat, particularly because the density of its population (almost 10 million people, according to the latest estimates) and its proximity to the areas most affected.
These areas are, among others, and Bolobo Mushie (Bandundu), specified by the Director of the Programme against the disease in the Ministry of Health.
Dr. Benoit Kabela even fears that cholera has become endemic in the capital of the DRC. As for measures against cholera, he said:
"These are not drugs that will stop the cholera, but the best hygienic conditions because in Kinshasa, cholera is spread by human contact."
The same source points out, moreover, a person with cholera in nine other contaminates. And they can contaminate up to 99 others who do not present symptoms but may in turn spread the disease.
