DRC: Cholera deaths and cases soar

KINSHASA, 7 October 2011 (IRIN) - There has been an increase in the number of cholera cases and deaths in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo where an outbreak has been ongoing since March, say humanitarian agencies.

At least 6,910 cases and 384 deaths had been reported as of 3 October, according to a report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), compared with a total of 3,896 cases and some 265 deaths by 20 July 2011.

UN calls for urgent funds to deal with ongoing cholera outbreak in DR Congo
        Cholera beds

18 November 2011 – The United Nations humanitarian arm warned today that $5.5 million is urgently needed from donors to combat an outbreak of cholera that has infected more than 17,000 people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Elisabeth Byrs, a spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said that extra resources are needed to continue the work of both UN aid agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in responding to the outbreak.

Four provinces along the Congo River – Bandundu, Equateur, Kinshasa and Orientale – are the worst affected by the epidemic, but cases have now been reported in eight of the country’s 11 provinces and the rainy season is about to begin.

OCHA said cholera is particularly difficult to tackle in the DRC because of the impoverished country’s persistent water, hygiene and sanitation problems. Many villages and communities do not have access to clean drinking water or to decent toilets, and people are often reluctant to report cases for either social or financial reasons.

The $5.5 million sought will be split between water and sanitation activities and a medical response, with the country’s western provinces the focus of most aid activities.

In July, the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) already allocated $4 million so the UN World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) can bolster their activities.

Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with the bacterium known as vibrio cholerae. The disease has a short incubation period and produces a toxin that causes continuous watery diarrhoea, a condition that can quickly lead to severe dehydration and death if treatment is not administered promptly. Vomiting also occurs in most patients.

The disease remains a global threat and is one of the key indicators of social development, according to WHO. While cholera no longer poses a threat to countries with high standards of hygiene, it remains a challenge in countries with limited access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation.

In order to fight against this disease, the United
Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has organized
a training session for officials of 30 NGOs who will sensitize the public on proper hygiene measures
        .

KINSHASA (Xinhua) -- At least 23 people have died from cholera which broke out in Equateur province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), according to local sources.

“Even though the epidemic seems to have reduced in Mbandaka, cholera still affects some parts of the country especially in South Ubangi area in Equateur province where 15 people out of 119 cases that were reported since Nov. 5 have died. Eight other people died during the same period in Basankusu health zone,” the president of the local civil society groups, Modeste Bonkengu, said on Tuesday.

“In the town of Mbandaka, the cholera treatment center has not received any patient,” provincial Health Minister Mireille Betayi affirmed.

Congo-Kinshasa: Spike in Cholera Cases - UN

            27 January 2012

Cholera cases have soared in the Democratic Republic of Congo in recent weeks, the UN said on Friday, bringing the number of people infected in the year-long outbreak to 22,000 with 584 deaths.

Aid agencies have been trying to halt the spread of the water-borne disease that has ravaged eight of the country's 11 provinces since January 2011.

"There has been a spike in cases" since mid-December, with figures on the rise in the capital Kinshasa in particular, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.

Cholera, a contagious intestinal infection, has taken its heaviest toll on eastern regions however, with a quarter of all cases reported in Sud-Kivu province.

              CONGO: Cholera "continues spreading"

BRAZZAVILLE, 21 February 2012 (IRIN) - Health authorities in the Republic of Congo have recorded 340 cases of cholera, nine of them fatal, since June 2011, in the northern district of Likouala, and have warned that the disease continues to spread and that some health centres lack sufficient treatment.

?Some deaths have not been taken into account because the [deceased?s] families have not reported them,? said Jean Martin Mabiala, the doctor in charge of health services in the district, adding that there were other suspected cases that had not been confirmed because of the remoteness of their locations.

He said the crew of a river boat from the Central African Republic had buried two people suspected to have died of cholera in early February.

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), seven cases and two deaths were recorded between 20 and 26 February.
However, the situation remains under control. A cholera epidemic had hit Lubunga part of the

Humanitarian situation in Democratic Republic of Congo
Weekly briefing note to the press, March 28, 2012

Alarming increase of cholera in the DRC: the statistics of the first quarter approaching 40% of total cases registered in 2011.
Cholera remains a major health concern in all provinces of the Republic
Congo, with the exception of the two Kasai provinces. Trends suggest that if answers are not to scale implemented in the coming weeks, the situation may be more dramatic than in 2011.

According to statistics compiled by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO), 8144 cases including 120 deaths were recorded from 1 January to 27 March 2012, representing nearly 40% of
total cases registered in 2012. 6794 cases including 77 deaths were recorded in the eastern provinces of countries, suffering from chronic disease. These figures represent half of all cases reported in Katanga, Maniema, North Kivu, South Kivu and the Ituri district in 2011. The Province of South Kivu remains the most affected with 2,214 cases including 14 deaths since the beginning of the year.

In the provinces along the Congo River that are hit by the epidemic, Bandundu Province is the most affected with 528 cases including 16 deaths, followed by the Lower Congo with 379 cases including 8 deaths and the City of Kinshasa with 367 cases including 10 deaths.

Access to safe water and poor hygiene and sanitation remain major causes of the epidemic.
