On 15 July 2026, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Public Health and Prevention (MoPHP), through the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (COUSP), issued official correspondence No. 2533/MSPP/SE/SG/COUSP/2026 requesting urgent support from technical and financial partners to strengthen cholera preparedness and response efforts in Chad. The letter called for the mobilization of additional resources to support the national response plan and prevent further spread of the outbreak to other provinces of the country and beyond its borders.

The request was made in the context of an ongoing cholera outbreak in Karal Health District, Hadjer-Lamis Province. Following the notification of the first suspected cases on 13 June 2026, laboratory confirmation of Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa, and the official declaration of the outbreak on 18 June 2026, transmission has continued to evolve. As of 9 July 2026, a cumulative total of 167 cases and 5 deaths, including 3 community deaths, had been reported, corresponding to a 3 per cent case fatality rate (CFR). The outbreak is currently concentrated in four active health areas: Karal 1, Karal 2, Baltram and Alkouk where 23 villages and neighbourhoods have reported at least one cholera case.
