    Japan may be experiencing a measles outbreak, with the number of infected people this year surpassing the totals reported in each of the past two years.

    Measles is a viral infection that causes fever, coughing and rashes. Nearly all of those without immunity to it will develop symptoms when infected.

    The virus can also trigger pneumonia or encephalitis, leading to serious illness or even death.

    The National Institute of Infectious Diseases on Tuesday released preliminary data showing that seven cases of meals have been confirmed across Japan this year as of May 14...​

    ... Among the infected patients is a man in his 30s who lives in Ibaraki Prefecture. The man developed a fever, cough and rash on April 21 to 23 after returning from a trip to India. Leaving Kobe on April 23, he took a shinkansen to Tokyo. He was diagnosed with measles on April 27 in Ibaraki.

    On May 3, two people — a woman in her 30s and a man in his 40s – both developed symptoms and later tested positive. They happened to be taking the same train as the Ibaraki man on April 23, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government said. The two Tokyo cases mark the first outbreak in the capital since 2020. ...

    The most recent infections appear to have happened to strangers riding the same shinkansen for less than three hours.
