'Kisangani: MSF/Switzerland treats 40 children suffering from measles

    Published on Wed, 18/01/2023 - 13:01 | Modified on Wed, 18/01/2023 - 13:07

At least forty bedridden children at the general reference hospital in Kisangani (Tshopo) have complicated cases of measles and are being taken care of globally thanks in particular to Médecins sans frontières (MSF)/Switzerland. This international NGO thus supports the vaccination campaign against measles in this entity.

Two pediatric pavilions have been set up at the Kisangani general reference hospital. They house about forty children suffering from measles.

Doctor Basulila Labama, medical director of this hospital, indicates that these severe cases would be due in particular to the ignorance of the parents who are unaware of the signs of measles:

“There are some mums who don't know the early signs of measles so they try to hang around the house but there are also others who try to provide indigenous care. These are the practices that mean that when there are complications, they come to the hospital late…”

The measles epidemic is currently raging in the Tshopo health zone. It benefits from the support of Médecins sans frontières/Switzerland. This allows the overall care of children admitted to this medical training to the great satisfaction of their mothers.

    One of them is expressed:

“I didn't know my child had measles. Three days later, I followed mobilizers who passed on our avenue asking parents to bring their children to be vaccinated against measles. We learned on the spot at the hospital that the care is free. We spent nothing. We eat very well and for free, the treatments are also free and we sleep peacefully…”

Dr. Basulila asks parents to send their children to the hospital in time to avoid cases of complications from childhood illnesses.

Insecurity in eastern DRC prevents measles vaccination

Young children are the first victims of the new measles epidemic in the Oicha area. Most often they are not vaccinated.

On a bed at the Oicha General Referral Hospital, Eliza Semida watches over her one-year-old child who tested positive for measles . He has been hospitalized for a week. Eliza Semida lived in the village of Kengele, located 15 kilometers from Oicha, in North Kivu . His village was attacked by rebels and the inhabitants fled. Her child had not yet received the measles vaccine, at the ninth month of his birth, as planned .

" My child is sick, affected by measles" , says Eliza Semina at the microphone of DW. " He has not yet had this vaccine due to our daily movements which are caused by the insecurity in the region. We were fleeing every day ! When I left the maternity ward here in Oicha, I immediately returned to the village. Some time later, we were forced to leave because of the insecurity and this continues until today. Before, the nurses brought us vaccines. But this situation of insecurity disrupted everything . The nursing staff did not The nurse who followed us, the one who brought us the vaccine, was killed by rebels in the village."

Since the beginning of the year, Oicha General Hospital has received more than 60 children who tested positive for measles. Hundreds of others also went through this service between September and December.

Limit the spread of the disease

The pavilion with more than 50 isolated beds to receive children infected with measles is no longer able to accommodate all the sick. Beds are therefore arranged along the corridor of the pavilion and outside visits are prohibited.

Nurse Marie Nguvi fears the consequences of this overflow: " In the hospital, we have children from zero to ten years old, we have also recorded a few cases of adult patients. But what we fear, with this outbreak of case is that the disease as we see it attacks all children and once it falls on ground that has less immunity, as in malnourished children, it takes the child right away. scared because at the moment the pavilion we have chosen for the isolation of these children is overwhelmed and we no longer know where to put those who come to us. This means that there are a few cases that we have put outside our isolation framework."

"Most children are insufficiently vaccinated" (K. Kyusa)

Officials in the Oicha health zone say they are waiting for batches of vaccines to organize a campaign to limit the spread of this viral disease. The country's health authorities and the WHO have already been alerted.

    Health workers targeted

In Oicha, the first case of measles was detected in a site for displaced people. Over the past three years, eight health facilities in the region have been attacked and set on fire in attacks led by rebel groups . The consequence is that health workers have limited their movements to these villages which have become inaccessible due to the danger.

DRC / North Kivu: 7 cases of measles deaths and more than 700 contaminations notified in Beni in three months

    January 20, 2023 0 By GRANDJOURNALCD.NET

At least 700 children with measles have been registered in Oicha health zone in Beni territory in North Kivu since last September. The health authorities of this health zone deplore the death of at least 7 children among the positive cases since the declaration of this epidemic.

To date, there is an outbreak of positive cases in the health structures of this area, the general reference hospital of Oicha which receives the cases is now oversaturated, a situation which worries about new contaminations.

“At present the pavilion we have chosen for the isolation of these children is overwhelmed. We don't know where to put other children who come to us, there are even cases that we have put outside of our isolation setting due to lack of space. This makes us fear possible contamination, ”said a care provider in this health structure.

Visits to this pavilion are now restricted, breastfeeding women are prohibited from accessing this block of the hospital which receives positive and suspected cases of this disease. All health areas in this health zone are affected by measles apart from that of Kainama, confirms nurse Kule Kyusa in charge of preventive care and epidemiological surveillance in the Oicha health zone.

The health authorities of the health zone plead for the granting of a vaccine by the Congolese government in order to organize a vaccination campaign against this disease.

It should be noted that measles is an infection caused by a virus of the paramyxoviridae family. The measles virus is usually transmitted by direct contact or through the air, infecting the respiratory tract and then spreading throughout the body.

Beni: about 100 new measles cases notified in one week in Oicha

      Published on Sun, 29/01/2023 - 14:13 | Modified on Sun, 29/01/2023 - 14:14

One hundred new cases of measles, including two deaths, were notified in one week in the health zone of Oicha, territory of Beni (North Kivu).

This brings to 850 the total number of cases of this disease notified since last November.

Children aged 7 months to 10 years are the most affected by measles in the Oicha health zone.

Among the 850 cases notified since last November, there are already 9 deaths.

For his part, the nurse supervisor in charge of prevention and epidemiological surveillance activities in the Oicha health zone speaks of a worrying situation.

Achype Kyusa announces a meeting of partners, intervening in the health sector for the planning of a vaccination campaign against measles in this region:

“Change, no. The cases continue to register but also some cases of death. And then, we will have an extended meeting with the partners working in the health zone to organize the mass campaign against measles. We are also waiting for the administrator, the mayor and the others, we will discuss it to see how to start the campaign if possible next week”.

Archipe Kyusa specifies that a batch of 10,000 doses of vaccine made available by the Butembo health zone has already arrived in Oicha.

Beni-Measles: the authorities launch the response to stop the epidemic which has exceeded the bar 1000 cases including 12 deaths in Oicha

        Friday, February 10, 2023 - 08:46

A vaccination campaign against measles has been carried out since last Monday in the health zone of Oicha, in the territory of Beni (North Kivu). More than 1000 cases of the epidemic including 12 deaths have been recorded. Displaced sites are heavily affected by this disease. 30,000 doses of vaccine have been sent to the area but the local health authorities are experiencing a shortage of available vaccine.

The vaccination team faces a first challenge at Oicha General Hospital. The names and ages of the children are sometimes forgotten. Parents are pygmies who had fled their villages because of the massacres and who are reluctant to live today in sites crowded with displaced people.

The measles vaccine seems to be new for this category of recipients, but the magnitude of the disease requires children to be vaccinated.

“We buried a member of our family who died of measles. We don't want to lose another one, that's why we bring the children for vaccination. We are amazed to have our children vaccinated today because in our forests, we pygmies were cured of measles with traditional medicines, which is not the case today”, testifies Apolina Kisuba.

The disease has already killed 12 people, 80% of whom are displaced. Too high a number of deaths also due to malnutrition as evidenced by Germain Madahi, attending nurse met in an isolation room.

“Those who are dying are cases that present with complications, including malnourishment. Most are cases that come from IDP sites, as life there is almost mediocre. They have nothing so they fall into malnutrition by contracting this pathology, it gets complicated and in the end we are forced to lose the sick, ”notes nurse Germain Madahi.

At least 42,000 people need to be vaccinated in the area but only 30,000 doses of vaccine are available, a problem raised by the supervisor of preventive activity and epidemiological surveillance in the Oicha health area.

“In the 15 health areas where we are going to vaccinate the population is around 42,650, you see with the 30,000 doses of vaccine there is a gap. Those who have priority are more children from six months to 59 months and who are more affected but nevertheless there are even those who are eight years old, six years old, 40 years old who also catch the disease. That is to say, from an early age they have never had measles and now because of the epidemic they are also catching measles,” says nurse Kule Kyusa, in charge of surveillance. epidemiology in Oicha.

In addition to the lack of vaccine against measles in the area, another challenge remains the activism of ADF fighters who can also prevent the health authorities from vaccinating 2,600 children in the neighboring town of Kainama.

DRC: Kanyarutshinya IDP camp, near Goma, more concerned following the proliferation of suspected cases of measles and cholera

        Tuesday, February 14, 2023 - 07:46

Suspected cases of measles and cholera are multiplying among the displaced gathered in Kanyaruchinya, near Goma. These men, women and children have moved closer to the provincial capital of North Kivu fleeing violence related to M23 activism.

“Today we are concerned about the increase in the number of suspected measles cases. Since the beginning of the year, more than 200 children with symptoms of measles have been treated in Kanyaruchinya and Munigi. Knowing that this disease is highly contagious, the living conditions and promiscuity of children in IDP sites are conducive to the rapid spread of cases,” said Justin Mbuya, medical manager of the intervention of Doctors Without Doctors, to ACTUALITE.CD Borders (MSF) in Kanyaruchinya.

Children showing symptoms of this disease were cared for by the teams of this NGO not only in Kanyaruchinya, but also in Munigi

One of the solutions is vaccination: "To curb the transmission of this virus, the teams are in discussion with the health authorities to organize a vaccination campaign as soon as possible in the Nyiragongo health zone", he said. -he adds.

          EVENT DESCRIPTION

The measles outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
continues to evolve with an increasing trend observed in the first
          weeks of 2023.

Cumulatively, since epidemiological week 1 to week 4, 2023 (week
          ending 28 January 2023), a total of 15 459 suspected measles
cases, including 152 deaths (CFR: 1.0%) were notified from 264
health zones of 26 provinces. This shows a 62% increase in the
number of suspected cases compared to the same period in 2022
(5 936 cases and 118 deaths). In addition, 16 health zones have
crossed the epidemic threshold in the past four weeks, including
three health zones that crossed the epidemic threshold in week
          4, 2023.

Of the 264 samples of suspected cases analysed in the National
Laboratory of the Institute National Research Biomedical since
the beginning of 2023, 151 (57%) were confirmed positive for
measles (IgM+). Eighty percent (80%) of the confirmed cases are
less than five years old, and 68% have an unknown vaccination
status. In addition, 36 cases tested positive for Rubella (IgM+).
Most of the measles suspected cases (81%) (n=12 591) were
          reported from Lomami province (n=5 055), South Kivu (n= 3 033
cases), Tshopo (n=991) and Sankuru (n=103).

          In epidemiological week 4 (ending 28 January 2023), 3 119
suspected measles cases, including 32 deaths (CFR=1.0%), were
notified in 264 health zones of the 26 provinces. Half (50%) of
the new cases were reported from Sankuru (Ototo health zone,
n=89), Maniema province (Punia health zone, n=89), North
          Kivuovince (Masisi (n=99), Karisimbi (n=109), Mweso (n=136),
Oicha (n=203) health zones) and in Lomami province (Mulumba
          health zone, n=843).

          PUBLIC HEALTH ACTIONS

The National Measles Coordination Committee continues
to coordinate the response to the measles outbreak across
the country, working with the various sub-committees and
          supported by WHO and partners.

Coordination meetings are held regularly at the national level
Epidemiological surveillance and laboratory activities are
ongoing, including the investigation of suspected measles
cases with a collection of samples and throat swabs in
          affected health zones.

WHO is distributing laboratory sample collections kits in
          affected districts.

Vaccination activities are ongoing in 13 provinces, including
the effective introduction of VAR2/VPI2 and reinforcement of
the cold chain system at different levels.

Measles follow-up campaign preparation for 2022-2023 for
          children aged of 20 789 882 children aged 6 to 59 months
with a budget of 6.2 million are under preparation.Vaccines
VAR 2 (flacons de five doses) and VPI 2 are available in the
country. Risk communication and community engagement
activities are ongoing: Training materials for community
health workers to raise parents’ awareness on vaccination
          are available.

          SITUATION INTERPRETATION

The measles outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo
continues to evolve, however with an increasing trend. The
continuous emergence of cases is likely a result of suboptimal
vaccination coverage. To interrupt further outbreak propagation,
there is a need to scale up ongoing response activities accordingly,
          with comprehensive coverage.

South Kivu: more than 120 measles deaths in 2 months

            Published on Fri, 03/03/2023 - 13:18 | Modified on Fri, 03/03/2023 - 13:19

The province of South Kivu is currently facing the measles epidemic, especially in its western part, where around a thousand cases have been recorded since January 2023, including 124 deaths. The care of sick children began two weeks ago, health authorities said Thursday, March 2. According to them, the routine measles vaccination campaign will be launched next week.

“For measles, it must be said that the most affected health zones are the health zones on the western axis. And it is essentially the health zone of Kamituga which has just spent almost two months in an epidemic. Kamituga has passed around 500 cases and the cases are only increasing, despite the interventions carried out there,” announced the head of the epidemiological office at the provincial health division, Justin Bengehya.

There is also the Kitutu health zone, which also reported 144 cases this week.

“ These are the two health zones that started the epidemic four weeks ago and unfortunately these are the two health zones where there is high lethality. Because, at the level of the health zone of Kamituga, we recorded 660 cases and 10 deaths, it is enormous! And we are hard at work for public health interventions ,” he continued.

Still on this axis, there is the Mwenga health zone which has taken over the notification, adds Justin Bengehya:

“This week, it has just notified 30 cases, (therefore) times 10. And so there, we also have to think quickly about the interventions to be carried out. In the first two health zones, Kamituga and Kitutu, investigations were carried out, samples were taken which confirmed that there was measles”.

With regard to Cholera in South Kivu, the situation is now under control at the central prison of Bukavu which had recorded 50 cases of cholera with 4 deaths the previous week.

Kwilu: nearly 370 children with measles in 3 months

              Posted on Tue, 21/03/2023 - 12:45 | Modified on Tue, 21/03/2023 - 12:45

Nearly 370 measles patients, including 10 deaths, have already been recorded since January to March in different health zones of Kwilu province. These statistics were delivered on Monday, March 20 to Radio Okapi, by the coordinator of the Expanded Vaccination Program (EPI), Dr Steeve Matoma.

This epidemic, declared since last year, according to Dr. Steeve Matoma, currently affects at least eleven health zones out of the twenty-four in the Kwilu provincial health division.

              The most affected areas are:

              Lusanga

              Kikwit-North

              Kikwit-South

              Kongo

              Bagata

              Bulungu

              Masimanimba

              Koshibanda

              Gungu

              Mosango

              Kingandu.

Among the factors favoring this disease, the EPI/Kwilu coordinator cites in particular the non-vaccination of several children whose parents neglect the vaccination schedule.

Dr Matoma makes parents aware of respecting the vaccination schedule for their children before the age of one year:

“You should know that the child must be vaccinated before the age of his first birthday. When we are vaccinated, we acquire collective immunity. This is what would also allow children to be protected. Often when the child is already over 6, 7 months old, sometimes the mothers give up and do not take the children to where they need to be vaccinated against measles”.

In addition, this EPI manager announced the organization, in the coming days, of a mass vaccination campaign to respond to this measles epidemic in Kwilu.

By 2022, a total of 1,244 measles cases, including one death, had been reported in the Kwilu provincial health division.

Ituri: Measles rages in Mambasa, several deaths recorded

              By Kinshasa newsroom March 21, 2023 at 12:52 p.m.

The measles epidemic has been raging in Mambasa territory for several months. This is revealed by the civil society of the Babila-Babombi chiefdom this Monday, March 20, 2023 in a statement made to the press.

Referring to health sources, this citizen structure indicates that more than 118 cases of this epidemic have been recorded. Several deaths were also recorded.

“The measles epidemic is more than 118 cases in the 10th epidemiological week in the rural health zone of Mandima. This does not take into account the unregistered cases in the community making up the Mandima health zone,” explains Gilbert Sivamwenda, its president.

Despite this situation, reports our source, “the health authorities are deaf in their ears despite alerts from health centers and reports from the affected sub-zone. Several deaths are reported in many villages.

So to put an end to this situation, civil society calls on the population to apply hygienic standards.

Ituri: more than 120 cases of measles recorded in 2 months in Mambasa

                Published on Thu, 23/03/2023 - 20:30 | Edited on Thu, 03/23/2023 - 20:30

More than 120 cases of measles, with two deaths have been notified in the space of two months in the health zone of Mandima, territory of Mambasa, (Ituri).

The head doctor of this health zone, Dr. Job Bakwata delivered these statistics, this Thursday, March 23, to Radio Okapi.

He said that the majority of patients are children whose age varies between 0 and 5 years, but adults are also affected.

“The cases are only increasing. This is very serious because the disease affects even adults. It is really very alarming. We also have cases who are in the community, who do not come to consult us. It is a highly contagious disease,” said Dr. Job Bakwata.

The high density of the population, including the presence of displaced people who live in deplorable hygienic conditions, is at the root of this disease, according to Dr. Job Bakwata.

“The fact that has aggravated the situation is the displacement of the population. People infected from the Mambasa health zone as well as from the Mabalako health zone in North Kivu. Who also experienced the same situation. So these are areas that our populations often frequent. The health zones that I am talking about are the zones which are the most affected and which have a large number of internally displaced people”, he underlined.

This doctor fears a general contamination because of promiscuity.

He calls on community members to take patients to health facilities:

“All the sick who are in the household, that they can go to the health structures for their care. And the sooner the better.”

According to him, “the most effective intervention would be vaccination”.

Dr. Job Bakwata asks the government and its partners to prepare a vaccination campaign in order to limit the spread of this epidemic.

We call on parents to bring children to be vaccinated against this disease. We have the vaccine that is there which is given at 9 months but we find that many parents start the vaccination and do not finish so they do not respect the vaccination schedule and other parents do not want their children to be vaccinated", he said. lamented.
