    6 cases of measles identified
    All children aged 6 months 11 years in Rewa, Macuata, Suva and Nasinu to receive measles vaccine

    6 new cases of measles have been identified in Fiji.

    2 cases are in Labasa, 3 in Rewa and one case is in Nasinu.

    The Ministry of Health has initiated an immediate containment response, which includes the management and isolation of confirmed cases, home quarantine of immediate family members and contact tracing.

    The Ministry says they have also put in place a plan of action for the respective medical sub-divisions.

    They say they are also immediately embarking on a supplementary immunisation campaign to protect high-risk groups who may not have immunity to measles and stop the outbreak from spreading beyond the current subdivisions.

    The Ministry says all children aged 6 months to 11 years for the Rewa, Macuata, Suva and Nasinu Medical Sub-Divisions will receive one dose of the measles vaccine.

    They add all children around Fiji who have turned 1, and those in year 6 and are yet to receive their measles vaccine are encouraged to turn up to the nearest health facility for their vaccination...

    Three active cases of measles in Rewa

    The province of Rewa currently has three active cases of measles.

    Wainibokasi Hospital’s Medical Officer in Charge, Doctor Fane Rabici confirmed this at the Rewa Provincial Council meeting yesterday.

    Rabici says the three active cases are from Suvalailai, Cautata and Manoca...

          MoH records measles, rubella cases

          The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has recorded eight measles and two Rubella cases. In a recent statement, Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong, said this was determined after initial tests returned positive.

          “We have also been made aware that a number of circulating viruses can result in false positive tests for measles and Rubella,” he said...

            Fiji has a significant number of children under the age of five, who are not vaccinated and are vulnerable to measles infection.

            Permanent Secretary for Health Doctor James Fong says this after confirming that the results for the 10 cases of suspected measles that were announced on July 1st returned negative.

            Dr Fong says similar to countries around the world, Fiji’s routine childhood immunization coverage for diseases such as measles has dropped due to the pandemic.
