Brazil: More measles confirmed in São Paulo, Fears of new outbreak
    by News Desk
    April 13, 2022

In a follow-up on a recent report on measles in Brazil, a new case of measles registered in São Paulo turned on the alerts among the health authorities: it was the third record of indigenous transmission since February, without connection to each other, according to a Folha de S. Paulo report.

There is fear of a new outbreak of the disease, and the government of São Paulo is already preparing a campaign to encourage the vaccination of children up to 5 years, the target population of the immunization.

The case was confirmed this week in Santos, the same city where another patient had been diagnosed with the disease last month. In February, another person with measles was identified in the city of São Paulo...

Measles returns to frighten Brazil amid low vaccination and new cases in Sao Paulo
Andrea Hargraves April 18, 2022 4 min read

Two cases of measles in São Paulo, one in the capital and one in the city of São Vicente, on the state’s southern coast, have reconfirmed fears that had lurked in the two years of the novel coronavirus epidemic: the possibility of a new outbreak as it did in 2019.

According to the Ministry of Health, there were 18,203 confirmed cases and 15 deaths in the country that year. As a result, Brazil lost the disease eradication certificate, which was granted by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in 2016.

For Juárez Cunha, president of the SBIm (the Brazilian Society for Immunization), the social distancing imposed by Covid-19 gave the idea that the measles outbreak had been resolved, however, that was not real.

“The numbers are down as a result of the non-pharmacological measures that have been adopted for Covid-19, because measles is also transmitted by a respiratory method, but we continue to have an outbreak in the country. We still have cases in São Paulo and Amapá, even during the pandemic, the trend is for this situation to increase now.” ‘, warns the pediatrician...

Semusa warns of measles cases in Rondônia
Porto Velho recorded one death caused by the disease

Rondônia had measles cases again, after about four years without positive records of the disease. In the last week, Porto Velho also recorded the first death caused by measles in Brazil in 2022. Because of this, the Municipality of Ji-Paraná, through the Municipal Health Department (Semusa), turned on the alert to avoid contagion in the municipality. .

Currently, Ji-Paraná has a suspected case under investigation at the Central Public Health Laboratory of Rondônia (Lacen-RO). The municipality has not recorded positive measles cases since July 2018.

“We are on alert and we need to emphasize that vaccination is available in Ji-Paraná. We ask that the target audience look for vaccine rooms and protect themselves against measles, to avoid a possible outbreak in our municipality”, warned Wanessa Oliveira e Silva, secretary of Semusa.

Semusa's Immunization Division is carrying out the measles vaccination campaign, aimed at children aged 6 months to under 5 years old (4 years, 11 months and 29 days) and Health workers who are being summoned to receive the vaccine, indiscriminately. , regardless of the vaccination status of each one.

“In recent years, the country has been facing the risk of a measles outbreak. Now, Rondônia has registered cases again, after four years without positive cases for the disease. This sets an alert and highlights the importance of vaccination against measles”, highlighted Cristiane Della Libera, director of Semusa's Immunization Division.

"In addition to the fourth dose against Covid, health professionals are receiving the measles vaccine booster, due to the risk of outbreak, faced across the country, which we have experienced in recent years", said Cristiane Della Libera, director of the Immunization Division. from Semusa.

Health professionals should have two doses of the Triple Viral vaccine, which protects against measles, rubella and mumps, regardless of when they took it. The vaccination update is available to other audiences, up to 59 years old, in the rooms of the Basic Health Units (UBSs), according to each person's vaccination status.

According to the Ministry of Health, the intention is to update the doses that are late, in addition to expanding the protection of these audiences, considering the greater possibility of transmission for health professionals and for children to be part of the risk group of the disease.

Measles and flu vaccination remains low in Santos
          Published: May 10, 2022 - 4:34 pm

Adherence to measles and flu vaccination campaigns remains low in Santos. In relation to measles, aimed at children aged six months to under five years of age, coverage reached 23% of this population, a number well below the target of 95% established by the Ministry of Health (MOH).

The end of the mobilization is scheduled for June 3 and so far there has been no announcement of an extension by the Federal and State governments.

Santos has three suspected measles cases in 2022, all under investigation. It is important to remember that the vaccine is also intended for children with a card up to date, as the dose offered in the campaign serves as a booster....

With 64 suspected cases and low adherence to vaccination, Bahia turns on the red alert for Measles
Previously eradicated in the country, the disease already has 17 confirmed cases in Brazil.
Article originally published in Jornal da Metropole on May 19, 2022

The Bahian warning signal is on and an old acquaintance is responsible: measles. Until the second week of May, 64 suspected cases were reported in the state. Of these, 26 are still under investigation. The signal becomes even redder when the number of people immunized against the disease is analyzed. In Salvador, for example, only 9% of the target audience of the vaccination campaign received the immunizer.

The cases under investigation in Bahia are divided into 16 municipalities. Among them, the ones with the highest concentration are Vitória da Conquista (3), Adustina (3) and Ibotirama (3). In the capital, there are no notifications of cases of the disease. But the warning signal is also on and calls for attention. For the immunization coordinator of the Municipal Health Department of Salvador (SMS), Doiane Lemos, the concern is that the disease arrives and settles in the capital in the face of low adherence to vaccination.

The current vaccination strategy is aimed at children and health workers, but only 25,700 (9%) professionals and 18,900 (9%) children were vaccinated. The goal was to immunize 95% of children aged 6 months to under 5 years.

Even those who are not part of this public can be immunized with the triple viral vaccine, which also protects against mumps and rubella. According to the immunization coordinator, the triple is available for the general population up to 49 years of age, in the 158 vaccination rooms in the capital of Bahia.

For Lemos, the low demand for the vaccine is related to the population's false sense of security and the lack of knowledge about the complications and the high contagion power of the disease. Infectologist Adriano Oliveira explains that the index that calculates the power of spreading measles is between 12 and 18, which means that an infected patient can infect up to 18 people. Covid, for example, has the ability to contaminate up to 3 people.

Due to the high contagion potential, measles usually manifests itself in the form of an epidemic. But the infectologist has no doubts that there is an effective way to protect himself and others against measles: the vaccine.

“For years, Brazil was proof that the vaccine is effective. But neighboring and European countries did not do their part and the disease was not extinguished. We received many imported cases, which did not spread because we were vaccinated. Now with the low adherence to the vaccine, we already have cases produced in Brazil”, warns the infectious disease specialist.

So far, the country has confirmed 17 cases in 2022, distributed in the states of São Paulo, Amapá and Roraima. The number represents a setback, since in 2016 the Pan American Health Organization had considered measles as an eradicated disease in the country.

According to the infectologist, the disease behaves like a cold. Transmission occurs through the air or surfaces contaminated by particles of infected respiratory secretions. The symptoms are also similar to those of a cold. According to Andrade, the first manifestations are sneezing, coughing and body aches, but the disease can progress to a sore throat and the famous redness of the skin. In cases that lead to death, the virus reaches the central nervous system or the lung, causing respiratory failure.
