    'Nigeria: 1,158 displaced children infected by measles'

    LAGOS, Nigeria

    At least 1,158 children have been infected by measles, a viral disease, in the Nigerian volatile northeast Borno State, a global medical volunteer group said Friday.

    Doctors Without Borders, which is collaborating with the Nigerian health authorities, said in a statement most of the patients were children from families displaced from their homes by terror attacks in the area.

    ?So far a total of 1,158 children with measles have been received in Gwange pediatric hospital in Maiduguri,? it said.

    David Th?rond, the organization?s head in the country, said cases of measles among children have risen since Dec. 3, 2020 when the first patient was admitted at a pediatrics hospital in the area.

    He said Zarbamari, a small town some 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the capital with over 45,000 people, has 58% of the total infected patients...

    Doctors lament rising cases of measles in Borno

    A group known as M?decins Sans Fronti?res (MSF) (Doctors without Borders) has disclosed that it is taking care of patients suffering from measles in and around Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

    It noted that the first child affected by measles was admitted to Gwange Paediatric Hospital on December 3, 2020, adding that since then, the number of patients has been increasing in Maiduguri hospitals. This was disclosed by MSF Head of Mission David Th?rond.

    ?A vaccination campaign is required to see the number of cases decrease,? he said.

    Continuing, Th?rond said: ?So far, a total of 1,158 children with measles have been received in Gwange Paediatric Hospital in Maiduguri from January 1 to April 3, 2021 out of which figure 58 per cent has come from Zabarmari, a small town located about 20 km from Maiduguri.

    ?In response, MSF strengthened the hospitalisation capacity in both Gwange and Fori health facilities, increasing the number of beds from 65 to 105 in Gwange...

      Nigeria misses measles eradication date, records over 10,000 cases in 8 months

      DESPITE the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) regional measles elimination objective for 2020, Nigeria reported more than 10,000 suspected measles cases during the first eight months of 2021.

      From January 1 through August 31, 10,106 suspected cases have been reported, including the 189 cases seen in August, according to a Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) report. In the previous year, the number of measles cases reached 93,000.

      More than six out of 10 cases were reported from three states: Borno (5,614), Ekiti (408) and Oyo (328).

      Cumulatively, a total of 110 local government areas across 29 states and FCT have recorded at least one measles outbreak in the current year (2021).

      Three-quarters of confirmed cases were reported in children nine to 59 months in age. Of the confirmed cases, 87 deaths were recorded...
