UN says many of the cases are complicated and associated with malnutrition

    YAOUNDE, Cameroon

Measles has resurfaced in the Democratic Republic of Congo's provinces of North and South Ubangui, with cases rising to 4,500 since an outbreak in mid-December last year which has affected mostly children under five years old, the UN said Thursday.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in its weekly humanitarian snapshot that many of the cases are complicated and associated with malnutrition.

OCHA said humanitarian partners are conducting assessments in the health zone of Bosobolo in Nord-Ubangi province in preparation for a potential intervention.

‘’Two other health zones are also being monitored where cases have been notified,” it added.

A two-year-long measles outbreak that killed over 7,000 children had been declared over in August 2020, according to the UN.

Since the start of 2019, around 310,000 suspected measles cases have been reported.

The DRC has launched several vaccination campaigns since the outbreak...

KINSHASA (Reuters) - A new measles outbreak has flared up in the Democratic Republic of Congo just eight months after authorities declared an end to the worst known outbreak in the country's history, medical charity M?decins Sans Fronti?res (MSF) said.

More than 13,000 cases of measles have been recorded in the country since Jan 1., the medical charity said, despite vaccination campaigns that have targeted millions of children across the country's remote jungle areas in the last two years.

The vaccine drive greatly reduced the number of patients, but failed to cut the chain of transmission, MSF said in a statement on Thursday...

        DRC: Measles epidemic hits Kinshasa

        - The authorities announce a mass vaccination campaign from next Tuesday
        Fatma Bendhaou |

        07.10.2021
AA / Kinshasa / Pascal Mulegwa

The Congolese authorities have announced the outbreak of the measles epidemic in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

"Twenty of 93 investigated cases declared positive out of 194 suspected cases," Provincial Minister of Health Liza Nemba Lemba said in a statement.

"Four health zones are affected including Kingabwa, N'sele, Masina 2 and Police," she added.

The Minister of Health announces "mass vaccination from next Tuesday" with "more than 170,000 children expected for vaccination".

Taking into account the current extent of the disease, "the interconnectivity of the health zones of the city of Kinshasa with other provinces, the relationship between this epidemic and the chronic malnutrition which is raging in the city of Kinshasa with a prevalence of 43%, appropriate measures are essential to control this epidemic, ”she added.
        ...
Between 2018 and 2020, the country experienced the largest outbreak on record. In just two years, more than 460,000 children had contracted the disease and nearly 8,000 had died from it, according to the authorities. Three quarters of them were under five years old.

          WEEKLY BULLETIN ON OUTBREAKS
          AND OTHER EMERGENCIES

          Week 44: 25 - 31 October 2021
Data as reported by: 17:00; 31 October 2021

          ...

          43 277 Cases
          665 Death
          1.5% CFR

          EVENT DESCRIPTION

The ongoing measles outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the
Congo continues to evolve with more cases and deaths reported.
From week 1 through week 40, 2021 (ending 10 October) a total of
43 277 suspected cases of measles with 665 deaths (case fatality
ratio (CFR) = 1.5%) have been reported from 369 (71%) health
districts out of 519 across 26 provinces.

The outbreak has been confirmed in 82 health districts across 23
affected provinces including the capital city of Kinshasa
          . A total of
          2 674 suspected cases have been investigated and 1 113 (41.6%)
cases found to be IgM+ for measles among which 702 (63.0%) cases
are children under five and half of them have an unknown vaccination
status. A total of 436 cases (39.2%) are IgM+ for rubella among
which 24 cases (5.5%) are more than 14 years old.

The last peak of weekly cases reported was at week 26 (ending 4
July) with 1 817 cases, after which a downward trend was observed
until week 32 (ending 15 August). An increase in number of reported
cases was observed from week 33 (ending 22 August) up to week
40 (ending 10 October). The last five weeks (from week 36) have
recorded an average of 951 suspected cases of measles with 1 413
          cases and 55 deaths.

In week 39 (ending 3 October), a measles outbreak was declared in
the densely populated capital city of Kinshasa in four health districts
(Kingabwa, Police, Nsele and Masina 2). From week 1 through week
38 (ending 26 September), Kinshasa recorded 205 suspected cases,
of which 107 (52.0%) were sampled. Of the sampled cases, 21 (20%)
were IgM positive for measles and 26 (30%) were IgM positive for
rubella. Only 17 (8.3%) people among the reported suspected cases
          had history of measles vaccination.

A total of 33.3% (7/21) of the confirmed cases are in the 6 –59 month
age group, while 66.6% (14/21) are between 6 months and 10 years
old. Among the reported suspected cases, 58.0% are female. The
risk of the rapid spread of the outbreak in Kinshasa is high given its
high population density and high chronic malnutrition rates among
          children under five (43%) years.

          PUBLIC HEALTH ACTIONS

Local response activities are being implemented in some health
districts across the country with support from implementing
partners especially for vaccination, case management and
          surveillance.

Reactive vaccination campaigns have been organized and a
total of 732 787 children from 6 months – 9 years have been
vaccinated in 331 health areas across 24 health districts.
Coordination meetings on response activities are ongoing.
Local investigations were carried out in some health districts
including those in outbreak mode in the capital city of Kinshasa
(Kingabwa, Nsele, Masina II and Police).

Preparation for the introduction of the measles vaccine second
dose in the routine immunization calendar is ongoing

Continuation of free case management with support from MoH
partners in the health districts in outbreak is underway

Resource mobilization to organize reactive vaccination
campaigns in the remaining health districts in outbreak
          continues.

          SITUATION INTERPRETATION

Measles is endemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
with outbreaks occurring every year. The low vaccination
coverage against measles in some health districts has always
been identified as the main risk factor for measles outbreaks.
There is an observed decline in measles cases and related deaths
as compared to the same period between 2018 and 2020, about
40% reduction compared to 2020 for the same period. This
decline could be due to the impact of the supplementary measles
immunization activities that was launched in 2019. However, this
should not lower vigilance, as the country remains one of those
at risk of a large-scale outbreak if appropriate measures against
          measles are not implemented.

          PROPOSED ACTIONS
It is important to mobilize the required resources to achieve
the objectives set in the national measles elimination plan for
the Democratic Republic of the Congo especially regarding
vaccination against measles to reduce the risk of future
          outbreaks.

Specific tailored response strategies are required for hard-toreach
areas in order to eliminate the chain of transmission.

Maniema: 37 dead in 4 months following an epidemic of Measles in Kabambare

              15.01.2022,
              HEALTH
              -
Kabambare health zone in Maniema province continues to record multiple cases of children suffering from measles. In the last 4 months, 37 children have already died, and 7 others are interned in the Lukolo health post, located in the Babuyu sector, Kalonda/Kibuyu health area.

The health authorities on site specify that this epidemic began to strike children since October 2021 in 4 villages. These include the Mutuka, Mutupeke, Crisoin and Lukolo villages.

Our source specifies that the Medical Director of the Kasanga General Reference Hospital in the Benyabemba group, went to the Babuyu sector this Friday, January 14 with agents from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), as part of the respond to this scourge that is raging in the health zone of Kabambare.

On the spot, the Medical Director confirms the care of the patients by the provincial government of Maniema with the support of MSF. However, he calls on the population to send sick children to health facilities and to fight against self-medication, which can be fatal to them.

For its part, the Civil Society of Babuyu welcomes the effort undertaken by the provincial government of Maniema and MSF, aimed at eliminating this disease. Olivier Lwamba Lusambia, president of this structure, says he remains optimistic, hoping that the new arrangements made by the provincial government will lead to something.

It should be recalled that the measles epidemic continues to resurface in the province of Sud-Ubangi.

Recently, this disease was declared in the health zones of Gemena and Bogose Nubea. But it was brought under control by the health authorities of Sud-Ubangi, supported by their partners, in particular the organization Médecins sans frontières.

New cases have just been recorded in four health zones out of the 16 in the Provincial Health Division (DPS) in Sud-Ubangi.

Kwango: more than 700 measles cases recorded since the beginning of 2022

                      Tuesday, February 15, 2022 - 2:13 p.m.

More than 700 cases of measles have been recorded in Kwango province since the beginning of 2022, specifically in the health zones of Kitenda, Popo Kabaka and Panzi. It was the epidemiologist of the provincial health division who announced it.

Dr. François Mwakisenda specifies that the shortage of inputs in two health zones out of the three affected does not facilitate care.

“There are three health zones that are affected, specifically the health zone of Kitenda which recorded 730 cases followed by the health zone of Popo Kabaka which recorded 9 cases and finally the health zone of Panzi. The difficulties are compared to the health zone of Kitenda where there are more cases, there is the MSF team which went there to fight back against measles. support, unfortunately the zones are not supported as soon as this kit ends. They will not be able to take care of the children. The other zones are not even supported. There is no partner that supports the measles response,” he said.

For Doctor François Mwakisenda, it would be better to organize campaigns of mass activities to vaccinate all children against measles. There are supplies only in the health zone where MSF intervened, but elsewhere there are no supplies. “The government could provide inputs to fight against this disease. From the first week to the fifth epidemiological week, we are already at more than 700 cases, it would be better to act well before waiting for the worst to happen”.

The measles epidemic was also declared in the province of Maniema at the end of 2021 by the interim governor of Maniema, Affani Idrissa Mangala.

In Kinshasa, 4 health zones have been affected since the end of August 2021, some severe cases of which have been reported in the outlying districts of Kinshasa. The provincial Minister of Health had requested the support of the central government for an effective response program.

The province of Sankuru has also been plagued by the epidemic since May 2021. The epidemic is in first position from the point of view of mortality in two of the affected health zones: Bena Dibela and Nkole

The provincial Minister of Communication of Lomami, acting governor on mission, officially declared, on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, the measles epidemic in his province.

Out of 121 cases recorded since January 8, 2022 in this part of the country, the results of 28 samples have come back positive.

This declaration comes, according to the provincial authority, after confirmation of the samples sent to the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB).

“It was noted in the province of Lomami, more particularly in the territory of Luilu, the resurgence of the epidemic of measles. Indeed, it is since January 08, 2022 that this contagious disease has been raging in the Luputa health zone. 121 cases were recorded, 28 of which benefited from a sample and the results are positive. Of the 121 cases, there are 20 unvaccinated cases and 11 deaths. It is also important to specify that in Kanda Kanda health zone, 1 case has been reported. This is a real public health problem. This pushes me to declare the measles epidemic in the province of Lomami,” said Minister Jean Hilaire Kazadi Mutambayi.

And to continue: "To date, our medical teams, supported by a few technical and financial partners in the health sector, have already begun the response to this epidemic".

He also invited the entire population of Lomami province to calm and be vigilant, but also to consult the nearest health facility in the event that a person presents symptoms related to the disease, for care. medical.
