The Chief Medical Officer of the Mobayi-Mbongo Health Zone in the North-Ubangi province in the North-West of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) warns of the rapid increase in cases of contamination of the measles epidemic since the February of the current year.
According to Doctor Ben Kotimo, at least 140 cases of measles have been recorded there.
“ The number of children infected with measles is becoming increasingly worrying in the Mobayi-Mbongo Health Zone. There have already been 140 cases and 28 deaths since last February. Several health areas are affected by the epidemic, notably those of Wenenge, Maniko, Satema, Fulu, Gbado-Gboketsha, Kota-koli 1 and 2, Mobayi, Sowa and Gbagobu ,” he said.
He also indicated that “ despite this resurgence of cases and contaminations, no response campaign has been organized so far and the situation is likely to be more serious” .
Nevertheless, he noted, medical teams from the Mobayi-Mbongo Health Zone are deployed on the spot and are trying somehow to maintain the situation while waiting for the response campaign with the support of health partners.
This situation should challenge the competent authorities called to get involved for an urgent intervention of the response to control this epidemic of measles.

DRC: 73 measles deaths in South Kivu since the start of the year

At least 73 children have died of measles disease in South Kivu province since January 2022, health authorities said.
6113 cases of this disease were notified in different health zones of the province during the same period.
"In the total in the province, the case of measles since the beginning of the year is 6113 cases of measles. We have already lost since the beginning of the year 73 children because of this disease", announces Claude Bahizire, responsible for communication of the Provincial Health Directorate of South Kivu.
Last week 874 measles cases were recorded nationwide with 15 deaths. Fizi health zone remains the epicenter of the disease with 382 cases followed by Lamera health zone.
“This week which has just ended, from Monday to Sunday, the province recorded 874 cases of measles with 15 deaths. The health zone of Fizi had to notify 382 cases with 5 deaths, the health zone of Lemera 229 cases with one death, the HZ of Itombwe 93 cases with 9 deaths but also the health zones of Nundu and Ruzizi are affected. So the 15 deaths it is in a few days that we have just recorded them", added Claude Bahizire.
In addition, the provincial health directorate is continuing to supply health zones with medicines and other necessary inputs.

South Kivu: 85 measles deaths recorded in 5 months

Eighty-five cases of death have been recorded out of more than seven thousand cases of measles listed since the beginning of 2022 in South Kivu.
According to the communication officer of the provincial health division, Dr. Claude Bahizire, 28 health zones out of the 34 in the province are affected by the measles epidemic among children.
"It is the health zone of Fizi which is in the lead with more than 3000 cases and also 53 deaths among the 85 deaths recorded in the province. Of the 34 health zones in the province, there are already 28 zones of health who have already notified at least one case” , he detailed.
He also claims that arrangements are made for free care of children with measles:
"We have decided to increase the allocation of measles drug kits in the health zones that are affected so that treatment is free. The government and partners are committed, there are already health zones that benefit from care kits. There is also awareness that we must reinforce so that parents can quickly bring children who have fever, who have rashes. And at times parents may find that the child has tears and has red eyes, the child must be taken to the hospital quickly, it could be measles."

Kasaï Oriental: more than 1,700 cases of measles including 8 deaths detected since February

In an interview granted this Tuesday, June 21 to ACTUALITE.CD, the head of the provincial health division in Kasai-Central province, Nestor Tshiteku, said that the province has more than 1,700 measles cases to date.
He claims that ten (10) health zones are affected by this epidemic. However, a response has already been organized in seven of the ten zones.
“Ten health zones are currently affected by this epidemic. Starting from the first epidemiological week until the twenty-third, we have a total of 1,743 cases of measles, including 8 deaths. The provincial health division has 17 health zones. There have been limited responses that have been organized in the health zones that have already been declared epidemic. We have just completed this response, but surveillance remains reinforced in the 19 health zones," Tshiteku Kaboto said.
Among the preventive measures recommended, the head of the health division speaks in particular of the strengthening of routine vaccination in all the health zones of the province.
"Prevention remains much more the routine vaccination that has existed for all this time. All parents must have their child vaccinated already at birth until before their first birthday or eleven months while respecting the outline of this vaccine. There is also vitamin A which the child should benefit from every six months up to the age of 5,” he concluded.
Symptoms of measles include cough, runny nose, inflamed eyes, sore throat, fever, and red, blotchy skin.
Last May, the province registered 936 cases of measles, which was declared at the beginning of February of the current year. 7 of the 17 health zones were affected by this epidemic, which is also raging in South Kivu and Sankuru.

Twenty-eight people have died out of approximately 2,800 cases of measles recorded since last January in 19 health zones in Kasaï-Oriental.
According to the chief physician of the Provincial Health Division in Kasaï-Oriental, Dr. Bonheur Tshiteku, this epidemic affects more children aged 6 to 59 months.
He attributes the spread of this disease to the low vaccination coverage due to a lack of means and to the movement of the population.
He launched a cry of alarm in order to obtain the vaccines in order to counter this epidemic.
“ We had to organize the response in 7 health zones, including 5 urban and 2 rural. Measles: Kasaï-Oriental crosses the bar of 6,000 cases including more than 50 deaths

Haut-Katanga: More than 40 cases of measles recorded in one week in Kasenga

"To organize vaccination campaigns against measles in some villages, we sometimes have to travel four days, which represents a great logistical challenge to maintain the effectiveness of the vaccines in the isolated localities of this region", affirmed the pharmacy supervisor for MSF in the former province of Katanga, Bertin Kabwe.
“This situation represents a great challenge to keep the doses of vaccines cold in these regions far from large agglomerations. These difficulties become more complex during rainy periods when the roads become impassable,” he explained.
