Measles: teams start vaccination from house to house to stop the virus outbreak in Amap?

Family Health Strategy (ESF) teams and hired by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will leave home from home, starting this Monday (18), in 7 municipalities in Amap? (Macap?, Santana, Mazag?o , Laranjal do Jari, Vit?ria do Jari, Oiapoque and Porto Grande) to try to stop the measles outbreak registered in the state since the beginning of 2020.

In the action, which is called a vaccine scan, professionals will perform application of triple viral doses in those who cannot prove to be vaccinated against measles, from 6 months to 59 years of age; and will also update the vaccination booklet for children under 5 years old.

Even with the house-to-house campaign, doses are available for free at health centers, on weekdays, from 8 am to 5 pm.

Hired to integrate measles control through PAHO, an international health organization, linked to the United Nations (UN), Silvia Mau?s says that about 800 health professionals are involved in the vaccine scan that has a day and time to start and end .

"The scan starts on Monday and continues until February 24th. We will only stop on Sundays and Carnival holidays. Neither on Macap?'s birthday nor on Mazag?o's we will suspend. The action will be from Monday to Saturday, from 8 am to 12 pm and 2 pm to 6 pm ", he explained.

The Superintendence of Health Surveillance (SVS) emphasizes that it is important that users have a vaccination card in hand when the team arrives at the home. The guideline is to search the residence for cards already issued.

"We ask them to collect the vaccination cards, especially adults who usually issue several cards in the campaigns. It is important that they collect the cards, staple, and carry them in their wallets, because if they do not prove that they have already had the vaccine, will have to take it again. Sometimes the person already took it, but to be sure, we need to vaccinate ", pointed out Silvia

Vaccine scanning is an active vaccination. The areas demarcated by the ESF teams will be attended, and especially the uncovered areas. The health teams will be dressed in personal protective equipment (PPE), all in white, with a mask, and with vehicles identified as part of the action.

Health teams were trained to perform vaccine scanning during the pandemic. In the capital Macap?, with the collaboration of more than 400 professionals, the goal is to immunize 58,000 people, according to the city.

    Numbers

Vaccine screening has been planned since October 2020, when the situation was not yet so serious. The number of the disease in the state reached 189 positive cases throughout the past year and Wednesday (6). Most cases were concentrated in the Metropolitan Region of Macap?, totaling 187 patients.

By September 2020, Amap? had recorded 84 measles cases. The number has more than doubled in the past three months. More than half of the patients are children up to 4 years old, according to the SVS; and among all cases, 55% is in females. See data by municipality so far...

Amap? confirms death of two babies from measles
    05/14/2021 Estad?o Content

The Amap? government confirmed the death of two babies, aged 4 and 7 months, from measles, the first caused by the disease in less than 20 years. According to the Superintendence of Health Surveillance (SVS-AP), the deaths occurred between March and April, were under investigation and the cause was confirmed on Friday, 14. A third suspicion was dismissed.

According to the management Waldez G?es (PDT), the first death of a 7-month-old girl was recorded on March 28, in Macap?. The child had not received a vaccine and began to show the first symptoms of the disease on February 24.

"This case was closed by the municipality as being of measles, however, for better investigation and confirmation of the case, the Central Laboratory of Amap? (Lacen) carried out tests and also sent samples to Fiocruz", says the government of Amap?, in a statement . "Both results confirmed the child's cause of death as being measles."

In a note, the Municipal Health Secretariat of Macap? stated that the girl did not take the zero dose of the immunizer ?because during the vaccination scan that took place in the neighborhood where she lived, she was not yet six months old, which is a pre- requirement to start your vaccination schedule ?.

The other confirmed record is that of a 4-month-old indigenous child in the municipality of Pedra Branca do Amapari, in the central region of the state. She also did not receive the vaccine because she was "outside the age group", according to the government. His twin sister, who also died, had the case under investigation, but the measles hypothesis was ruled out by the SVS-AP.

?There were two twin sisters, one of whom died on April 19 and the other on May 1,? says the G?es government. ?Both deaths were under investigation, and the result was that only the girl who died on April 19 had confirmed measles. Her sister tested positive for dengue as a cause of death. ?

Also according to the state administration, these samples were also sent for analysis by Fiocruz. "The tests done there confirmed the results here," said the coordinator of Communicable Diseases at SVS-AP, Jo?o Farias, according to a note.

Management says it has an action plan in conjunction with the municipalities to deal with the measles outbreak. ?The Government of the State of Amap? in partnership with the Pan-American Organization of the Americas (PAHO) carried out, earlier this year, a vaccine sweep action reaching more than 50 thousand people with more than 100 teams visiting homes in seven municipalities in the metropolitan region and border areas, ?says the statement. "However, vaccination coverage is still considered low."

Amap? re-registered the first measles case in October 2019, after 22 years without a record of the disease, and has since experienced an outbreak. Between January and May alone, 320 cases have already been reported - more than the 297 records confirmed over the past year.

?Measles is a serious infectious disease, transmitted when the patient coughs, speaks, sneezes or breathes near other people?, explains the SVS-AP. "The only form of prevention is through the triple viral vaccine, which, applied in two doses, protects against measles, rubella and mumps."

Last Tuesday, 11, the vaccination rate for the first dose in the state was 10.85%, according to information from Datasus. For the second dose, it was 4.66%.
