Samoa to shut government to deal with deadly measles outbreak
By Joshua Berlinger and Carly Walsh, CNN

Updated 3:49 AM ET, Mon December 2, 2019

(CNN)The government of Samoa will shut its doors Thursday and Friday and redeploy civil servants to help deal with a deadly measles outbreak, Prime Minster Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi announced in a special address Monday.

Fifty-three people -- 48 of them children younger than 4 -- have been killed by the disease in the South Pacific island nation in recent weeks, the government said in a news release. A total of 3,728 cases had been recorded as of Monday, according to the government. None of the victims were vaccinated, Tuilaepa said.
The decision to shut government services for two days is the latest in a series of drastic steps Samoan authorities have taken to stop the outbreak of a disease that was thought to be almost eliminated globally, but has made a dangerous comeback in recent years.

Samoa measles outbreak: Details of the country's shutdown to combat deadly spread
              Florence Kerr in Samoa08:57, Dec 04 2019

The Samoan Government has ordered a complete shutdown of the country in a bid to vaccinate its people - with roads closed to non-essential vehicles, inter-island travel banned and citizens ordered to stay at home.

A two-day shutdown, which starts on Thursday, will see the public and private sectors closed as the Government strives to vaccinate at least 90 percent of its population.

The State of Emergency sanction comes as the measles epidemic continues to kill Samoa's most vulnerable. Latest figures show that 55 people have died to date, 52 were children under the age of 15, while 23 were babies aged less than one year old. Only one death has been an adult over the age of 19...
