Minas Gerais has already reported 36 suspected cases of measles in the first three months of 2019. Out of this total, 19 were discarded and another 16 are being investigated; one case was confirmed.

According to the bulletin released on Thursday (4) by the State Department of Health (SES), the cases were registered in 16 cities. Most are in the Divin?polis Regional Health Center in the Center-West region of Minas Gerais.

A confirmed diagnosis of the disease was classified as an imported case. The patient is a 29-year-old Italian living in Betim, Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte, and has made recent trips to Croatia and Italy.

In 2016, Brazil received the certificate of elimination of measles virus circulation from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). However, since there is a circulation of the virus in the North for more than 12 months, there is a risk that the country will lose its certification of a disease-free nation, which is highly contagious and the causative agent is able to cross states.

The return of measles in the country began last year. The first cases were registered in the North, which received a large number of refugees from Venezuela, a country that already faced an outbreak of the disease. Experts are unanimous, however, in stating that if the vaccination of the Brazilian population were adequate, there would be no conditions for the disease cycle to be established.

But the northern region, like much of the country, had low vaccination coverage against the disease. With the susceptible population and circulation of the virus, there were propitious conditions for the onset of an outbreak of measles. That's what happened. During 2018, 10,326 cases of the disease were confirmed in 11 states. The peak was recorded in July, with 3,950 infections found...

A mutated measles virus is responsible for the recent outbreak of that virus that has led to 1000 cases in the S?o Paulo area, according to Edison Luiz Durigon, a professor at USP's Institute of Biomedical Sciences and one of the country's most respected virologists.

The previous outbreak of the disease, which was considered eradicated in Brazil in the past decade, occurred in 1999. The current version of the virus, however, is another...
