LOS ANGELES - For the third time in two months, public health officials are warning travelers of possible measles exposure at Los Angeles International Airport after an infectious person traveled between terminals there.

Someone with the highly contagious illness landed April 3 in Terminal 7 at Gate 70A, then ate at the B Grill by BOA Steakhouse at LAX Terminal 7 Departures before departing the airport from Terminal 8, Gate 81, the L.A. County Department of Public Health said in a news release.

Officials estimate other travelers could have been exposed between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the arrivals area, and between 7 p.m. and 10:40 p.m. in the departures section...

SHASTA COUNTY ? Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency Public Health Branch is investigating a nother confirmed case of measles; this time the patient is an infant. This case has been linked to the Shasta County measles case announced on April 11. Public Health officials urge residents to be aware of measles symptoms and to take precautions to help stop the spread. ?This case is particularly disheartening, since the child is too young to receive the necessary vaccinations,? said Karen Ramstrom, the Shasta County HHSA Public Health Officer. ? Infants are one of the vulnerable groups that we want to protect with high levels of community immunity.?...

        Public Health Investigates Measles Outbreak
Residents urged to get measles immunization to protect their health and prevent disease spread

        (Spanish version available here.)
LOS ANGELES ? Given widespread outbreaks in the United States and internationally, and locally-acquired cases, the chance of exposure to measles is increased at this time. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) is investigating a number of reports of measles in Los Angeles County residents (excluding Long Beach and Pasadena as any cases identified in those cities are reported by their local health departments). These include a local outbreak of four confirmed measles cases linked to one another after international travel and an additional single case of measles after international travel. Public Health urges residents who have not been fully immunized against measles with two doses of the measles immunization, to contact their healthcare provider to get fully immunized in order to better protect their individual health and to prevent the spread of measles to others.
Infected people can infect those around them before they have symptoms and know they are infected. The measles virus can be transmitted from one person to another up to 4 days before the onset of rash. About 90% of people who have never been immunized against measles become ill 7-21 days after exposure.
These five cases are the first cases of measles confirmed by Public Health among Los Angeles County residents and the first cases of transmission within LA County in 2019. These are unrelated to the four non-resident cases that traveled through Los Angeles County earlier this year. The majority of the cases were unvaccinated.
?We will likely see additional measles cases in Los Angeles County, so it is important if you or someone you know has the symptoms of measles or has been exposed to measles to contact your healthcare provider by phone right away before seeking treatment,? said Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, Los Angeles County Health Officer. ?The best way to protect yourself and to prevent the spread of measles is to get the measles immunization, with two doses of measles immunization being about 97% effective at preventing measles.? Public Health recommends the following:
        • All children should receive two doses of measles immunization. The first should be administered between the ages of 12 to 15 months, and the second between the ages of 4 and 6 years. Written confirmation from the administering doctor or other clinician should be kept. The immunization can be given from ages 6-11 months, if there is concern about direct exposure to measles or if travel to places with current measles outbreaks is anticipated.
        • All other persons should locate written verification they have received 2 doses of measles immunization in their life. The second dose recommendation was not made until 1989, so many adults have received only 1 dose.
        • Those who are unable to locate written verification of 2 doses of measles immunization should receive 1 dose right away and a second dose in 4 weeks.

When Public Health identifies contacts of a person confirmed to have measles during an investigation and that contact does not have written verification of 2 measles immunization doses, they will be subject to quarantine of up to 21 days from date of exposure. This will be enforced by a Health Officer Order for quarantine. A blood test may be done to check for immunity and possible removal of the order for quarantine.
Public Health is disclosing information below on locations where measles exposure may have occurred. This disclosure is necessary to reach individuals who may have been exposed because they were present at these locations during the dates and times noted below. In situations where all persons who have been exposed can be identified, Public Health works with organizations, case contacts, and family members to directly notify everyone involved.
The following locations have been currently identified as potential measles exposures:
        • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Tom Bradley International Terminal, arrived at Gate 218 on April 1 from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
        • University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), Franz Hall on April 2, 4, and 9 and Boelter Hall on April 2 and 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 6 :00 p.m.
        • California State University, Los Angeles, Main Library, on April 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
        • El Pollo Loco Restaurant, 1939 Verdugo Blvd, La Ca?ada Flintridge, on April 11 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
        • El Sauz Tacos, 4432 San Fernando Rd, Glendale, on April 13 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m..

There is no known current risk related to measles that exists at any of these venues at this time. Public Health investigates all cases in the county and identifies potential contacts to try to prevent additional spread of measles. Public Health will continue to monitor for measles cases and identify others who may have come in contact with persons with measles. Public Health will communicate with health care providers, health plans, local governments, schools, and elected officials to provide updates on the measles outbreak and actions they can take to help prevent the spread of measles and support the countywide response.
        About Measles
Common symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis (red eyes) and a rash which usually appears 10 to 21 days after the exposure. Individuals should contact their healthcare provider by phone before going in if they develop measles symptoms, so measures can be taken to prevent possible spread to others in the provider?s waiting room. They should also tell their doctor or other healthcare provider if they traveled internationally or had international visitors in the last 21 days or had exposure to another person with measles.
Measles immunizations are available at your healthcare provider, local pharmacy or health clinic. Public Health clinics offer no or low-cost immunizations for individuals who are uninsured or underinsured. Health Officials Order Quarantines for Hundreds of UCLA, Cal State L.A. Students Exposed to Measles
Posted 12:29 PM, April 25, 2019, by Associated Press and Nouran Salahieh, Updated at 03:53PM, April 25, 2019

A quarantine order was issued Thursday for hundreds of students and staff at two Los Angeles universities that may have been exposed to measles and either have not been vaccinated or can?t verify that they have immunity.

Measles in the United States has climbed to its highest level in 25 years, closing in on 700 cases this year in a resurgence largely attributed to misinformation that is turning parents against vaccines. Roughly three-quarters of this year?s illnesses have been in New York state.

The University of California, Los Angeles, said that as of Wednesday there were 119 students and 8 faculty members under quarantine. Seventy-one students and 127 staff members are quarantined at California State University, Los Angeles after a possible measles exposure at a campus library, school officials said.

The numbers were expected to change as students and staff turn in immunization records or take blood tests to establish immunization.

A person with a confirmed measles case visited the library at Cal State L.A. on April 11. Because the library receives about 2,000 visitors a day, the number of those exposed was not immediately known.

Authorities issued a blanket quarantine order for all students, faculty and staff who?ve been to the library on that date and asked those who visited between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to notify university officials...

Measles cases among adults climb in the Bay Area, most exposed through international travel
There were 15 new cases of measles reported statewide just last week

Measles cases are on the rise statewide this year, with 15 new cases reported just last week. And those numbers reveal a disturbing new trend: About three-quarters of this year?s 38 reported cases occurred in adults who had never received vaccinations or had partial vaccinations.

California public health officials said Thursday that the San Francisco Bay Area has reported 10 confirmed cases of measles this year, most of them linked to unvaccinated adults exposed through international travel. Four were in Santa Clara County, four in San Mateo County, one in San Francisco County and one in Santa Cruz County...

Measles Outbreak Spreads As New LA Case Identified
A sixth Los Angeles County resident contracted measles and likely rode an airport shuttle and shopped at a major retailer while infected.
By Paige Austin, Patch Staff | Apr 30, 2019 4:20 pm ET

LOS ANGELES, CA ? A sixth Los Angeles County resident has contracted measles - the latest in a slow-moving outbreak brought home by international travelers. The latest person to contract measles likely picked up the disease at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on the same day an infected traveler passed through the airport in April.

Officials believe the newest patient could have spread the virus while riding in an airport shuttle and shopping at a Home Depot store in Lancaster.

Health officials are asking anyone who may have been in contact with the infected patient to come forward. Persons who may have been on-site at the date and time for any of the below locations may be at risk of developing measles for up to 21 days after being exposed:

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Tom Bradley International Terminal, on April 23, 2019 between 4:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Fox Auto Parks LAX Shuttle on April 23, 2019 between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Moviegoers who went to see "Avengers: Endgame" at a theater in California could have possibly been exposed to measles, health officials said.

The Orange County Health Care agency said a woman who had just returned from a trip abroad was infected with measles when she went to see a midnight showing of the blockbuster hit at the AMC Theater in Fullerton on April 25, according to KNSD. Those who attended the same screening may have been exposed to the disease until around 4 a.m.

Los Angeles County public health officials announced Thursday, May 2, that they are investigating one more confirmed case of measles, bringing the total number of cases for the year to seven.

Officials said the new case is linked to the outbreak of four other cases reported in April, but that it is not connected to patients who visited UCLA and Cal State Los Angeles campuses last week. Those incidents led to the health department issuing hundreds of quarantine orders fearing large-scale exposure.

The health department has not identified any public exposure locations associated with this latest measles case. Health officials have been asking those diagnosed with the illness to provide a detailed account of all public locations they visited so the public can be alerted about potential exposure...

Orange County Infant, UC Irvine Grad Student Are Latest Measles Cases In SoCal
by Julia Paskin in News on May 4, 2019 1:45 PM

An Orange County infant who was too young to be vaccinated is hospitalized with measles, OC health officials announced Saturday. That latest case became public hours after UC Irvine officials said a graduate student who spent time on campus this week had also been confirmed to have the highly-contagious disease.

The student, identified as a man who lives in Long Beach, did not need hospitalization and is currently quarantined at his home, officials said. Orange County health officials said he had been vaccinated and had no history of international travel.

Long Beach City Health Officer Dr. Anissa Davis said the man is among some 3% of people who still contract measles despite being vaccinated. The good news is that those people typically suffer less severe symptoms and also are not as contagious to others.

The man had spent extensive time in public before his diagnosis, including at a movie theatre, grocery stores and wine bars in Long Beach, according to information released by health officials [Details below.]...
