    Measles spreads at Osaka site; infected woman used Shinkansen

    OSAKA--Health officials have issued measles warnings to anyone who shopped at a commercial complex here, particularly for Valentine?s Day gifts, or used specific bullet trains connecting Osaka and Tokyo earlier this month.

    A public health center in Osaka said Feb. 14 that a staff worker and six customers were infected with measles at the Abeno Harukas commercial complex, bringing to 16 the number of confirmed cases there.

    Earlier this month, nine workers at a Valentine?s Day fair venue on the ninth floor of the complex?s wing tower were confirmed infected with measles. The latest announcement is the first to list customers.

    The six customers are in their teens to 30s and visited the complex on Jan. 26 or 27.

    The latest staff member confirmed infected is a woman in her 30s who worked at the Valentine?s Day venue between Feb. 5 and 10...

    ...Also on Feb. 14, the Osaka prefectural government said a woman in her 40s who traveled between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka stations on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line on Feb. 8 and 10 was infected with measles...

    ...She traveled to Tokyo on the Nozomi No. 340 bullet train that left Shin-Osaka Station at 11:56 a.m. on Feb. 8.

    She returned to Shin-Osaka using the Nozomi No. 121 bullet train that left Tokyo at 6 p.m. on Feb. 10.

    The infected woman was in reserved-seat cars on both trains...

    ...The number of confirmed measles cases in Osaka Prefecture this year was 46 as of Feb. 12, more than triple the figure for all of 2018.

    Japan is witnessing a possible outbreak of measles, with the number of patients since the start of this year hitting the highest in a decade....

    ...The National Institute of Infectious Diseases says that 22 new patients were reported across the country in the week to February 10. This brought the total number of patients since the start of this year to 167 in 20 prefectures.

    The figure marks the seasonal highest in a decade, and second largest since 2008, when the number of patients throughout the year exceeded 10,000.

    By prefecture, the largest number of patients, 49, were reported in Mie Prefecture in central Japan, followed by 47 in Osaka, 17 in Aichi and 11 in Tokyo...

      Local authorities across the nation are scrambling to contain the spread of measles, as health experts are reporting the highest number of cases in a decade for this time of year.

      As of Feb. 10, the number of measles cases in Japan totaled 167, with patients reported in 20 of the nation's 47 prefectures, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) said on Feb. 19.

      Mie Prefecture recorded the highest number of patients with 49, followed by Osaka with 47 and Aichi with 17. Tokyo was fourth with 11 cases...

        Two Narita airport workers confirmed to have measles

        CHIBA - Two workers at Narita airport are confirmed to have been infected with measles, the local government said Tuesday, warning about the risk of possible exposure to the highly contagious virus at one of the busiest airports in Japan.

        The local government of Chiba Prefecture where the airport is located said a male worker in his 30s fell ill with a fever of 39 C on Tuesday last week.

        He worked in the Terminal 2 building from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. the previous day, 2 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. last Wednesday and 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. last Friday. He was diagnosed with measles on Sunday...

          Measles quickly spreading in Japan

          Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) ? The number of measles patients has been quickly growing in Japan since the beginning of this year, according to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases.

          The reported patient count came to 566 from Jan. 1 to May 26, more than double the preliminary figure of 282 for the entire 2018, the institute said Tuesday.

          Among 47 prefectures, a total of 142 infected patients were reported in Osaka...
