    Montreal's public health agency warns of possible measles exposure in 2 clinics
    Patient who had recently travelled abroad diagnosed with measles, may have exposed others to viral disease
    CBC News ? Posted: Feb 05, 2019 7:11 AM ET | Last Updated: an hour ago

    Montreal's public health board is warning healthcare workers about possible measles exposure, after a woman infected with the virus visited two medical clinics in the city last week.

    The woman arrived in Montreal on Jan. 27 on a plane that had travelled through Frankfurt and Toronto, though the viral disease may have been caught in Poland, the health agency says.

    The patient went to two medical clinics on Jan. 28 and 30, during the contagious period of the illness. The CIUSSS Centre-Sud-de-l'?le-de-Montr?al is not naming the two clinics.

    Health officials are trying to identify anyone she may have come in contact with.

    They're warning healthcare workers to watch for signs of measles over the next few weeks...

      Health worker who caught measles had been vaccinated: MUHC

      MUHC policy requires that all employees ? clinical as well as non-clinical ? must have received all the recommended childhood vaccines.
      Aaron Derfel, Montreal Gazette
      Updated: April 8, 2019

      The employee at the McGill University Health Centre who contracted the measles ? and who might have inadvertently exposed dozens of patients to the highly contagious virus for several days at the end of March ? had received the standard two shots years earlier, an MUHC infectious-diseases specialist said Monday.

      The employee, whose name or position has not been disclosed, had returned recently from a vacation in the Caribbean, where it?s likely that he contracted the virus, Dr. Marie-Astrid Lefebvre told reporters.

      Initially, the employee suffered from ?vague symptoms,? which explained the delay in confirming his measles diagnosis. From March 23 to March 27, the employee worked while contagious in the adult intensive-care unit, cardiac surgery unit, infectious diseases clinic and cardiovascular, heart failure and heart transplant clinic at the Glen site in Notre-Dame-de-Gr?ce.

      ?We believe that the individual in question acquired the infection while on a trip to the Caribbean roughly three weeks before the start of his symptoms,? Lefebvre said. ?We do not believe it was an acquisition from Montreal itself, and we do not believe we have any secondary infections as well.?

      Lefebvre noted that MUHC policy requires that all employees ? clinical as well as non-clinical ? must have received all the recommended childhood vaccines, and that was the case for the worker who fell ill. She explained that although the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is considered 97 per cent effective, some people go on to contract the measles despite getting the two shots...

        Montreal under 3rd measles alert after infected person visits clinic, hospital
        The unvaccinated person contracted the highly contagious disease after returning from a trip to Paris. Exposed individuals could develop an infection by May 25.
        Aaron Derfel, Montreal Gazette
        Updated: May 6, 2019

        The Montreal Public Health Department has launched its third measles exposure alert since February after confirming that an unvaccinated individual contracted the highly contagious disease after returning from a trip to Paris on April 26.

        The individual was considered contagious from April 26 to May 4. During this period, the person went to a Montreal clinic on April 28 and April 30, as well as to a local hospital on May 1.

        Public-health authorities say they are now retracing the person?s contacts with others, especially with another unvaccinated individual ?who is at high risk of developing the measles and who frequented a school during this period when (the virus) could have been under incubation,? according to a statement.

        Given that the incubation period of the virus is seven to 14 days ? and in certain cases as long as 21 days ? authorities are warning that it?s possible that someone who is not adequately protected against measles could develop an infection by May 25...

          Health Department lifts measles alert at Montreal school
          Quebecers who plan to travel outside Canada are urged to check whether they've been vaccinated.
          Aaron Derfel, Montreal Gazette
          Updated: May 7, 2019

          The Montreal Public Health Department is urging Quebecers who are planning to travel outside Canada to check whether they?ve been vaccinated against the measles after authorities declared three measles alerts since February.

          All three alerts were issued after Montrealers returned from trips aboard where they contracted the highly contagious disease. In two of the three cases, the individuals had never been vaccinated.

          On Tuesday, the health department lifted a measles exposure alert at a north-end school after an unvaccinated female student, who was exposed to a family member who caught the measles during a trip to Paris, did not develop any symptoms in the previous four days...

            • If you develop redness, consult a doctor;
            • Advise the person who greets you that you think you have measles, ask for a mask and wear it.
            Measles information

            Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus that travels through the air through droplets from the nose and throat of infected people. The first symptoms of measles are:
            • high fever;
            • runny nose;
            • cough;
            • conjunctivitis (red eyes);
            • general malaise.
            Subsequently, redness appears in the face and then on the body.
            It can take from 7 to 14 (exceptionally up to 21 days) days between exposure to the measles virus and the onset of symptoms. This is called the incubation period. A person begins to be contagious 4 days before the appearance of redness, and it can remain contagious up to 4 days after their appearance. Measles lasts 1 to 2 weeks.
            Importance of vaccination

            The DRSP recalls that vaccination is the best way to protect yourself against measles. All people who have never received the measles vaccine or who have never had the disease should also be vaccinated. This is the best way to protect yourself and others.

                  Call for vigilance - Possible exposure to measles in public places in Laval

                  Qu?bec, June 18, 2019
                  The Department of Health and Social Services wishes to inform the public of an ongoing intervention following the declaration of a measles case.
                  A person, then considered contagious, visited some public places in Laval on Thursday, June 13th.
                  People who have frequented the following places at the specified date and time are considered at risk of exposure:
                  • Walmart Laval Store Sainte-Doroth?e, at 700 Chomedey Highway, Laval, from 1:30 pm to 3:15 pm;
                  • Common areas and shops located near door 2 of CF Carrefour Laval, from 2:15 pm to 4:00 pm.
                  The following people should be evaluated for early intervention, which involves receiving injections of antibodies:
                  • Babies under 1 year old;
                  • People whose immune system is weakened;
                  • Pregnant women who are not adequately vaccinated against measles.
                  Preventive intervention must be done by June 20 at 4:00 pm to be effective. It is therefore recommended that persons from the above groups, who have frequented the places mentioned at the times indicated, communicate as soon as possible with Info-Sant? 811.
                  If you are not part of these groups and have frequented these places, there is no immediate preventive intervention recommended. However, it is advisable to be on the lookout for symptoms until July 8, especially if you are not vaccinated. The main symptoms of measles are severe fever, followed by redness on the body.
                  If you are not sure if you have received adequate vaccinations to protect yourself from measles, you can contact Info-Sant? 811.
                  Highlights:
                  It should be noted that, as a precautionary measure, interventions are already underway with the workers concerned and people in the other environments frequented by the person during his period of contagion.
                  Measles is a serious and highly contagious disease. It is caused by a virus that travels through the air through droplets from the nose and throat of infected people. It can take 7 to 14 days between exposure to the measles virus and the onset of symptoms. A person begins to be contagious four days before the rash appears, and can remain contagious for up to four days after they appear.
                  A person who has symptoms consistent with measles should limit contact with others and consult a doctor. It is important for this person to notify the doctor or medical clinic of his or her symptoms before presenting or upon arrival. Precautionary measures necessary to reduce the risk of transmission can thus be put in place (eg wearing masks).
