Residents in the eastern suburbs of Sydney have been issued an urgent measles warning after a man infected with the virus frequented a number of places in the area.

New South Wales Health issued the warning on Thursday after the man, who was vaccinated as a child, contracted the virus while overseas, The Daily Telegraph reported.

So far it's known the man stayed at shared accommodation on Park Parade, in Bondi, on April 2 and April 9 as well as visiting the Bondi Bowls Club around the same time.

On April 3 the man went to an appointment at the Bondi Junction Medical and Dental Centre after 3.30pm and then shopped at the Coles in Bondi Junction Eastgate on the afternoon of April 8.

The warning comes just one day after all Sydney and Maitland residents were issued with a similar warning after a female in her 20s was diagnosed with the highly contagious virus.

The woman was unknowingly infectious while at F45 Gym Haymarket and Macquarie University on April 3.

On April 4 she was at the Broadway Shopping Centre in Ultimo and back to the university before going to Central Station the following day.

She also did the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb on April 6 along with a visit to the Central Park Shopping Centre and Marcellin Park.

On April 7 the young woman visited the Maitland Hospital and the Rutherford Homemakers Centre.

NSW Health Director of Communicable Diseases Vicky Sheppeard said people in these locations at the time should be alert for symptoms up to at least April 23, 2019...

Spike in Australian measles cases likely caused by travellers, not anti-vaxxers
Australians unaware they need a second vaccination prompt calls for better outreach programs

Travellers rather than anti-vaxxers are most likely responsible for the spike in measles cases in Australia, where 92 cases of the disease have been confirmed in 2019, close to the number of cases for the whole of 2018.

The sudden rise in cases has prompted the health minister, Greg Hunt, to reiterate the importance of vaccinations. ?Immunisation saves lives,? he told reporters. ?The measles vaccine is very effective at protecting lives.?

But it was unlikely there had been an increase in the number of Australians questioning the vaccine?s efficacy and who opposed the vaccination, infectious disease experts say. Rather, some Australians are unaware that they are no longer immune to the disease, while others haven?t got around to getting their children vaccinated due to logistical reasons or language barriers...
