The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) is working with local health officials to investigate an ongoing outbreak of measles?a highly contagious disease.
On October 26, the NJDOH issued a press release announcing a laboratory confirmed case of measles occurring in an individual with international travel to Israel, where a large outbreak is occurring. On November 1, following the identification of additional cases, the NJDOH issued a second press release declaring a measles outbreak affecting Ocean County. Some areas of New York State are also experiencing measles outbreaks, including the lower Hudson Valley and parts of New York City.
As of December 12, 19 confirmed cases of measles have been identified in association with the outbreak including 16 confirmed cases in Ocean County residents and 3 cases in one Passaic household. This household has a direct epidemiologic link to the outbreak community in Ocean County. The majority of cases have been in persons who were not age-appropriately up-to-date with Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccines. Cases range in age from 6 months to 59 years and have rash onset dates that span from October 17 to November 25. These cases potentially exposed individuals in Ocean and Passaic counties (for a list of known public exposures, please see below). Persons exposed at these public locations would have been expected to have developed symptoms no later than December 9.
New Jersey?s measles outbreak will be declared over once two full incubation periods (a total of 42 days) have passed from the last day the last known case would have been infectious.
The Department is working in collaboration with local health officials to identify and notify people who might have been exposed to measles. In addition, NJDOH continues to distribute MMR vaccine to providers serving the outbreak community. Since the outbreak was declared, NJDOH worked with local health officials and area providers to facilitate the delivery of more than 12,500 doses of MMR to Ocean County. These doses were requested in direct response to the outbreak and are in addition to the vaccines already routinely provided through NJDOH?s Vaccines for Children and 317 Funded Adult Vaccine Program.
Anyone who suspects an exposure is urged to call a health care provider before going to a medical office or emergency department. Special arrangements can be made for evaluation while also protecting other patients and medical staff from possible infection.

Officials say there are now 21 confirmed measles cases in Ocean County in an outbreak that has also sickened three Passaic County residents.

New Jersey Health Department officials on Thursday confirmed five new cases of measles in Ocean County, bringing the total count in the outbreak that began in October to 21. "The 5 newly identified cases in Ocean County represent delayed reports of ill individuals," the state health department website reads. Measles Outbreak Declared Over In Ocean County
              By Chris Lundy -
              January 16, 2019

OCEAN COUNTY ? Now that 42 days have passed since the last known case was infectious, authorities have declared that the local measles outbreak is over.

The 42 days represents two incubation periods, according to the Ocean County Health Department.

However, just because there have been no new cases, it doesn?t mean that there?s an undiagnosed case out there, so medical professionals should still keep an eye out, the department said. Additionally, sporadic cases might still pop up from time to time.

Since October, 33 outbreak-associated cases were identified, including 30 confirmed cases in Ocean County residents and 3 cases in one Passaic County household that had a direct epidemiologic link to the outbreak community...
