Seven Cases Of Measles Confirmed In Rockland County
Saying there's the potential for further exposure, health officials have sent up more clinics for free vaccines.
By Lanning Taliaferro, Patch Staff | Oct 16, 2018 7:50 pm ET | Updated Oct 16, 2018 7:54 pm ET

NEW CITY, NY ? Rockland County has seven total confirmed cases of measles in three different groups connected to travel to and from Israel, county health officials said. Of those cases, two are secondary, meaning they originated from exposure occurring locally in Rockland.

Rockland residents have been exposed to measles three times in the past month. The first case of an international traveler with measles was in late September, and more cases due to separate international travelers, three from Rockland and one from abroad in early October, are leading to more cases of measles among non-immune residents, officials said.

County health officials offered a free vaccine to residents who had been exposed on Oct. 11. Now they're offering two more chances for a free vaccine.

Measles in Rockland County: 55 cases, Increased school exclusions

                          November 10, 2018 48

At the end of September 2018, an international traveler arrived in Rockland County with a suspected case of the measles.

There have been additional cases of measles from international travelers to Rockland, exposing more people to measles. People who are unvaccinated risk getting infected with measles and spreading it to others.

These cases are presently clustered in eastern Ramapo (New Square, Spring Valley, Monsey), however due to Rockland County?s small geographic size, exposure to the measles may occur anywhere in the county.

As of November 9, 2018, there are 55 confirmed reported cases in Rockland County.
Rockland County Executive Ed Day and County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert announce to residents that the Health Department is increasing school exclusions from the current 70% to 80% vaccination rate. This will affect a greater number of schools, meaning more students will have to remain home and be unable to attend school...

Measles Outbreak: 13 More Cases In Four Days In Rockland County
Now so widespread, with 68 confirmed cases, even those born before 1957 and those who were fully vaccinated are at risk.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY ? There are 68 confirmed cases of measles within Rockland County as well as 11 suspected cases. That's a jump of 13 cases in just four days.

County Department of Health officials said that the entire county should be considered at risk. Even people previously considered immune ? anyone born before 1957 and anyone who has received two doses of measles vaccine ? could catch the highly contagious disease.

Health officials tightened restrictions on schools in the geographic area where the outbreak is concentrated. All schools in New Square and any school in Spring Valley or Monsey where the immunization rate is lower than 80 percent, must keep un- or under-vaccinated students at home...

                              Recent Infections in Brooklyn
Since October, there have been 24 confirmed cases of measles in the Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn. The initial child was unvaccinated and acquired measles on a visit to Israel, where a large outbreak of the disease is occurring.
If you plan to travel to Israel, protect yourself against measles and get vaccinated at least two weeks in advance of your trip. If you have traveled to Israel and you have a fever, cough, red eyes, runny nose and body rash, contact your doctor.
