Recent Infections in Brooklyn and Queens
As of April 8, 2019, there have been 285 confirmed cases of measles in Brooklyn and Queens since October. Most of these cases have involved members of the Orthodox Jewish community.
The initial child with measles was unvaccinated and acquired measles on a visit to Israel, where a large outbreak of the disease is occurring. Since then, there have been additional people from Brooklyn and Queens who were unvaccinated and acquired measles while in Israel. People who did not travel were also infected in Brooklyn or Rockland County.
The neighborhoods that are affected include:
      • Bensonhurst: 1 confirmed measles case (no additional cases since November 2018)
      • Borough Park: 49 confirmed measles cases (no additional cases in the past week)
      • Brighton Beach: 1 travel-related case
      • Crown Heights: 1 (no additional cases in the past week)
      • Midwood/Marine Park: 3 confirmed measles cases (no additional cases in the past week)
      • Williamsburg: 228 confirmed measles cases (26 additional cases in the past week)
      • Flushing: 2 confirmed cases (no additional cases in the past week)

If you plan to travel to Israel, protect yourself and your family against measles and get vaccinated with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine at least two weeks in advance of your trip. If you have traveled to Israel and you have a fever, cough, red eyes, runny nose and body rash, contact your doctor (before going to their office).

New York City threatens yeshivas with closure amid measles outbreak
      Updated an hour ago

WILLIAMSBURG, Brooklyn (WABC) -- The New York City Department of Health is threatening yeshivas in Williamsburg with violations and possible closure if non-vaccinated students are allowed to attend classes during the current measles outbreak.

The outbreak in the Orthodox Jewish community is now at 285 cases since it began last October.

In December, the health department ordered yeshivas and childcare centers serving the Orthodox Jewish community in the affected zip codes in Brooklyn to exclude all non-vaccinated students from attending school or daycare until the outbreak was declared over.

Then, in January, one yeshiva in Williamsburg fell out of compliance with the exclusion mandate, allowing non-vaccinated children back into school or daycare.

Officials say this single yeshiva is connected to more than 40 cases...

Measles outbreak: City declares public health emergency with 285 confirmed cases
        April 9, 2019 Scott Enman

New York City declared a public health emergency Tuesday morning, ordering mandatory measles vaccinations for residents in parts of Williamsburg as the number of confirmed cases for the infection rose to 285 since Sept. 30.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said individuals and parents who ignore the order will be fined up to $1,000 and that ?disease detectives? would question them. The outbreak is primarily affecting the Orthodox Jewish community.

?Our goal is not to fine people or shut down schools,? de Blasio said. ?Our goal is to vaccinate people. We have the tools available now because of this emergency order to fine ? and fine very substantially. But if people just go and get vaccinated, there is no need for a fine.?

?If people ignore our order,? he added, ?We will issue fines.?

As part of the declaration, every unvaccinated person living in the ZIP codes 11205, 11206, 11211 and 11249 ? regardless of whether they have been exposed to the infection ? are required to receive the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine to stymie the outbreak...

Rockland measles outbreak spreads: Here?s what Westchester parents should know
          David Robinson, Rockland/Westchester Journal News Published 2:13 p.m. ET April 10, 2019 | Updated 2:20 p.m. ET April 10, 2019
The eight confirmed cases involved children who live in the Mount Kisco and Bedford communities in northern Westchester. None attend public schools or childcare programs. Six are siblings.

Authorities suspect measles spread to eight Westchester County children from ongoing outbreaks in Rockland County and Brooklyn.

News of the outbreak ignited questions in Westchester similar to those unfolding as hundreds of cases of the highly contagious disease prompted emergency declarations in Rockland and New York City.

What follows is an overview of what we know, and questions we're asking of county officials and community leaders involved in the public health response to the outbreak.

Where were the 8 confirmed measles cases?

The eight confirmed cases involved children who live in the Mount Kisco and Bedford communities in northern Westchester.

None of them attend public schools or childcare programs. They range in age from 6 months to 14 years old, and six of them are siblings, health officials said.

Two of the children had to be hospitalized, and at least one was treated at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco.

A possible case of measles was also treated at the CareMount Medical urgent care in Mount Kisco at 360 N. Bedford Road, said Dr.Lewis Kohl, medical director for CareMount Medical.

The potential exposure was April 2 at 7 p.m., Kohl said, and CareMount has directly notified patients, staff and anyone else potentially affected by the incident...

GOSHEN, NY ? The Orange County Department of Health said a person who was confirmed to have measles visited Woodbury Common Premium Outlets in Central Valley recently. The visit occurred Sunday, March 31, a spokesman for the county said.

Health officials said potential exposure to measles may have happened to people who were in the Nike Factory or Sayki Men's Fashion stores between the hours of 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Anyone who visited the property outside of this timeframe is not at risk from this particular exposure, health officials said.

The person with measles was from New York City, but a county spokesman said the health department didn't have information as to which borough was the place of residence.

There have been 17 measles cases in Orange County, including seven from last fall and 10 so far this year, a county spokesman said...

Recent Outbreak in Brooklyn and Queens

As of April 29, 2019, there have been 423 confirmed cases of measles in Brooklyn and Queens since October.
                                Vaccination Requirement in Brooklyn

On April 9, the Health Commissioner ordered every adult and child who lives, works or resides in the following ZIP codes and has not received the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine to be vaccinated:
                                • 11205
                                • 11206
                                • 11211
                                • 11249

On April 17, the Board of Health voted unanimously to adopt a resolution supporting the Commissioner's order and the vaccination requirement.
As of April 28, 21,284 doses of the MMR vaccine have been administered to people who are under 19 years old in Williamsburg and Borough Park since October.
People who demonstrate they are immune from measles or have a medical condition that prevents them from receiving the vaccine will not need to get vaccinated.
If the Health Department identifies a person with measles or an unvaccinated child exposed to measles in one of the above ZIP codes, that individual or their parent or guardian could be fined $1,000.
You can get vaccinated at a Federally Qualified Health Center in Brooklyn (PDF), or at our immunization clinic in Fort Greene.

The city's Health Department closed two more schools in Brooklyn after they failed to comply with the emergency order following a measles outbreak in the borough, officials said on Monday.

The two schools ? Tiferes Bnos on Marcy Avenue and Talmud Torah D?Nitra, a preschool on Bedford Avenue ? didn't comply with the order, which requires yeshivas and child care programs in certain ZIP codes to turn away unvaccinated children and provide the Health Department with access to medical and attendance records. The city has issued a total of 57 summonses for not complying with the emergency order...
