    Fear of vaccinations fuels French measles outbreak

    The French have been urged to overcome their distrust of vaccinations as the country experiences an outbreak of measles that has claimed at least one life.

    Agn?s Buzyn, the health minister, issued an urgent appeal today for those who have not had themselves or their children vaccinated ?to put this right.?

    A total of 387 cases of measles have been registered in France since the start of the year, with 83 people being admitted to hospital. The outbreak is particularly acute in the southwest region that is home to tens of thousands of Britons, where 269 cases have been recorded, up from 115 on January 24...

    Measles is currently affecting several French regions and the rapid increase in the number of cases since the beginning of the year may give rise to fears of another major epidemic throughout the country, French health officials report this week (computer translated).

    Since our last report one week ago, the number of measles cases in France has increased by more than 150 cases, bringing the total since early Nov. 2017 to 1,077 cases...

      In France, 64 of 94 metropolitan departments have recorded measles cases, with over 1,000 infections from early November 2017 to 19 March 2018.

      French public health authorities have said that 87 per cent of cases were either unvaccinated or under-vaccinated and the highest incidence has been in children aged younger than 12 months.

      Forty-seven per cent of all cases have been reported in Nouvelle-Aquitaine...

        A 26-year-old patient has died in France from the measles, the second fatality in a matter of months as an epidemic of the disease sweeps the country and health chiefs warn of the need to be immunised.

        French health authorities revealed on Wednesday that a 26-year-old patient had died from the disease, although details of the sex of the victim and the region where they lived have not been revealed.

        Health chiefs from French health authority Sant? Publique France said the patient's immune system was too weak to be given a vaccine and that they were probably contaminated by someone close to them who had not been vaccinated....

        ...Some 2,567 cases of measles have been identified in France since November with the western and southern departments of Gironde, Vienne and the Gard the most affected. Although the number of news cases has dropped slightly it stands around 50 a week...

          Health officials in France have reported the third measles fatality of 2018 in a 17-year-old immunocompromised girl from the region of New Aquitaine.

          Overall, there has been a decrease in the number of new weekly cases and has stabilized with an average of 40 reported weekly cases...
