Public Health England is advising attendees at summer music festivals to be vaccinated against measles, amid worries that the events could allow for the easy spread of an outbreak.

In a statement, the government body said that music festivals ?pose an ideal opportunity for the infection to spread quickly? and that ?close-mixing environments such as festivals are more at risk? of the disease spreading. Anyone with symptoms was also advised to stay away from music festivals.

It comes amid an uptick in measles cases in the West Midlands, with three times more cases reported in the first three months of the year compared with the same period in 2017. The West Midlands branch of Public Health England issued a more specific warning, targeting attendees of the BBC?s Biggest Weekend festival taking place in Coventry this weekend...

The letter said a member of the school community had been diagnosed with ?possible measles? and that children might be ?exposed to the infection?.

Hannah More is the fourth school to send letters to parents, following cases in Easton CofE Academy, St Barnabas CofE and Gordano School last week.

As of April, there have been more than 30 cases of confirmed measles in the South West since the start of the year, compared to none in the same period the year before...

Young people heading off on holiday to Europe, where there are large outbreaks of measles, are being encouraged to check they have had both MMR doses as many missed out when vaccination rates dropped in the early 2000s due to unfounded fears over the vaccine.

From the start of the year up to June 17 a total of 155 suspected cases of measles were reported in Wales to Public Health England (PHE), which collects reports for England and Wales.

Cases across England and Wales have now exceeded 1,500 in 2018.

The number of reports is 2.7 times higher than the 58 cases reported in the same 24 weeks in 2017...

More than 100 cases of measles have been reported in west London so far this year despite the disease being ?extinct? in the UK.

Just last year, the World Health Organisation declared that the measles virus was now extinct in the UK, but Public Health England has warned of an outbreak of the highly contagious disease in England.

Public Health England data shows the number of laboratory confirmed cases of measles in England from January 1 to July 22 is 781.

By far the highest number of confirmed cases is in London, which has 272 cases, while the South East has the next highest with 162...

Panic spreads as Israeli measles epidemic hits London's Charedi community
                              ...
An outbreak of measles in London?s strictly Orthodox community ? believed to have come from Israel ? has led to more than 500 children receiving emergency vaccinations.

More than 60 separate cases have been reported since the beginning of October, affecting a number of children who have never been immunised, the Times reports.

The vast majority of patients live in North London?s strictly-Orthodox community, centred in the boroughs of Hackney and Haringey ? the largest such community in Europe.

The outbreak, feared to be the most serious in decades, is believed to have been brought to the UK by Charedim returning from Israel after the chagim in September.
