Kiev (AFP) - Two people, including a five-year-old child, have died this month in an outbreak of measles in Ukraine, where the vaccination rate is among the lowest in Europe, officials said Wednesday.

The health ministry reported the death of an adult in the Black Sea port of Odessa, while official figures of the public health centre showed a five-year-old child died of measles in the region last week...

The situation with measles in Ukraine has stabilized, although it is too early to say about reducing the incidence rate. This was announced at a briefing by the director of the Center for Public Health of the Ministry of Health Volodymyr Kurpita.

He noted that during February 19-25 nearly 800 people became ill with measles in Ukraine: 294 adults and 489 children. This is 5% less than last week.

"We can state that the situation with the measles in Ukraine has stabilized, we are not talking about reducing the incidence, but about stabilizing the process," he said...

A total of 712 people have fallen ill with measles in Ukraine over the past week, the Health Ministry?s press service reports.
